How many months do you think Hiccup was in Valka’s flashback in the second movie?
It’s honestly very hard to say in the few seconds we get to see him, especially since babies do develop at such a wide variety of speeds and ways. It’s not unusual to hear that a baby starts to walk before they even attempt to speak. It’s also not that strange when babies skip crawling entirely and just walk.
We don’t see him do enough to be able to make an ‘official conclusion’ and even then we are left to guess whether Hiccup was fast, slow or just about average to develop in certain areas.
But if we were to try and break this scene down, we’d have to figure out what exactly Hiccup can do.
Grasping and Seeing
When Valka comes into the room, we see Hiccup react to Cloudjumper. He’s clearly focussed on him and grabs onto the talon Cloudjumper offers, focussing on that aswell. Being able to see and focus on the big dragon before him tells us he’s at least older than 1 month. Something big. The fact that he can focus on the talon tells us it’s very possible he’s beyond 3 to 4 months old. Something small.
To add to that, at the end of the flashback, we can also see that Hiccup’s gaze is on the direction Valka was taken in. It could be safe to assume that he’s able to focus on her small figure as she’s disappearing into the night. Once again, we see he’s able to focus his little eyes on something small, telling us once again he’s either 3 to 4 months or even older.
Now grasping hold of things is something a baby will most likely start to actively try from 3 months and up. They are born with the reflex to grab, but won’t actively seek to train this skill until around 3 months or so. With every passing month after that, they will continue to make leaps.
It’s generally around 4 months that they will be able to really grasp bigger objects, usually things such a toys, fingers and such. Shown here by Hiccup grabbing hold of Cloudjumpers talon.
Teeth
Now what’s also important is teeth.
And from these screenshots, it’s still really hard to tell if he has them or not. Is that a tooth that we see? Or does he still have just gums? It’s really hard to tell for me.
Either way, baby teeth are generally developed when the baby is between 4 and 7 months old. Some early bloomers can get them as early as 3 months (in some rare occasions they are born with one or two) while some late bloomers don’t have teeth until they are maybe even a year old.
So the fact that Hiccup may or may not have teeth honestly depends on what you think you see. If we are to take that slightly miscoloured grey-ish/white-ish blob as a possible tooth, we can possibly put him between the 4 to 7 months old.
Clapping
Something else we also see Hiccup do is clap. Briefly when Cloudjumper is standing over him, Hiccup does one solid clap.
Now usually the basic art of applause is something babies usually learn shortly before their first year, between the 9 to 12 months. Usually. Once again there is the fact that some babies clap a lot earlier (let’s say 7 to 8 months) or later (a year and a month, for example).
Clapping is a form of communication between parent and child, something the latter does to imitate the former. This can be encouraged by clapping to songs or doing little clapping games.
Now we don’t see Hiccup actively clapping his hands repeatedly. We see him do one single clap and that’s it. It’s a skill he’s most likely only just learning to do, but hasn’t mastered just yet.
To put it simply, Hiccup can:
Focus on objects, both big and small.
He can reach out and grab things.
He may possibly have a tooth.
He can clap his little hands.
We see him lift his head. (something I haven’t discussed since the neck muscles is the first of the muscles that a baby develops)
That would put Hiccup roughly between the 4 to 9 months old.
Premature babies
Than there is also the fact that Hiccup is, in canon, a premie. To the point that Valka feared losing him, but that he still managed to pull through even without modern medical science to aid him.
I dare not delve too deeply into this topic simply because this is quite a bit more complivated due to modern sciences allowing premature babies to have a higher chance of survival. From what I can gather, though, it’s possible for premies born as early as during the seventh month of pregnancy to survive without the need of an incubator without too many health complications. This would be around the 30th week of pregnancy.
But they would need to have been kept warm. I see people speak of a kangaroo-style incubating in which the mother or wet nurse (someone who breastfeeds the child instead of the mother) keeps the child under their dress as they sit in front of a fire or children kept in boxes close to stoves as makeshift incubators.
What premies do after an early birth is, first and foremost, continue to develop like they were supposed to in the womb. What needs developing first all depends then on just how early of a premie Hiccup really was.
When he reaches around his “39th week” (as in the week Valka was supposed to have had him in, not when he’s 39 weeks old), that is usually when the normal development of a baby will kick in. That is if Hiccup hasn’t been slowed down by sickness, complications, his possible very light weight and/or premature birth.
In conclusion: It’s really hard to tell exactly what age Hiccup is. All we know is that he wasn’t a year yet, due to him telling his mother “this is where you’ve been? For twenty years?” With Hiccup being exactly 20 years old in Httyd 2, it’s pretty safe to assume that he wasn’t a year yet when Valka was taken. It’s possible he’s between the 4 to 9 months old from the very rough estimation I’ve made, but being a premie means his development might make him older than his current abilities may imply.
Yah, I tried my best from the research I’ve done and my own experience with young children. The youngest being a few four month olds.
