Back Up Your Stuff
Earlier today, I spilled hot tea with honey and lemon on my laptop. I immediately turned it off and flipped it over, hoping against all hopes that it was salvageable. I ignored the burn on my wrist and trekked across New York City where I heard the bad news. The repair bill would be about $800. I decided I'd get an iPad and keyboard, and save the rest. I'm not thrilled with my setup, far from it, I will take it in stride and while this was an expensive accident, my data was untouched. Moral of the story: life happens. Back up your stuff. -Graphei
In light of current events, I'd like to remind everyone that tumblr has an inbuilt save a backup option.
Settings-> click the blog you want to backup-> scroll all the way down-> click the export button
You will wait for a very long time (last time I did a backup it took 3 weeks to be ready). You will get a link to a download of your tumblr. It will not be organized in a way that makes sense to humans, but it's something.
edit: They email you a notification that your download is ready. You don't have to remember to keep checking.
SAVE EVERYTHING YOU WRITE!!
Even if you’re working on draft 18 or your novel, don’t get rid of draft 3 just yet. You may find a place for scenes you thought were gone forever. You may find use for exposition you thought had no place in the narrative.
In my current round of edits, I’ve gone back to old drafts of the story at least three times, to pull bits of deleted description, dialogue and, at one point, went all the way back to Draft 1 to find a character that got deleted very early in the process and has since made a comeback.
Keep a copy of everything you write. Make a separate document for deleted pieces of writing. Stash your murdered darlings in a folder where only you can find them. You never know when they’ll need to come back to life.
with your crossposting tool for tumblr --> dreamwidth. is there any way to get it to crosspost old posts, or will it only crosspost new posts you create/reblog?
yeah no that will only pull in new posts once you set up the ITTT recipe. If you want to archive your stuff, there aren’t a lot of tools out there (yet), but check out this one - it’s a tumblr-to-wordpress export tutorial from Wordpress.com
I’m going to do this this coming weekend, just in case. I’m not sure it’ll download the media (like images), which is really the bigger concern, but right now, baby steps.
PSA: Back up your stuff
Have you backed up your writing lately?
If you want/need another place to stash your masterpiece, Dropbox is solid and integrates with a bunch of apps. If you don’t already have an account, you can sign up here with my referral link and we’ll both snag some extra space.

Note: If referrals aren’t your thing, www.dropbox.com to sign up.
