I got so excited I actually wrote something for the first time in over a month I couldn't wait for tease tidbit tuesday or wip wednesday or whatever so here's a daemon snippet!! I wasn't tagged, I'm just going for it :] I'm sure I got tagged in something and forgot about it, so consider this a response to any tag games I've been tagged in I guess
this is a prequel to the actual fic I'm working on, and will all be from maddie's pov! she's eight, here, and her daemon, traxin, is still unsettled. this got kind of long, so the rest of this is under a cut
you can see the daemon lineups here
“Are you ready to meet your new brother?”
Dad gets her settled in the chair before he moves to Mom’s side, his back to the rest of them. Her parents start to whisper, but Maddie puts her full attention on the babies being passed into her arms—her brother and his daemon—as the nurse helps to support his head. Traxin is fluttering with excitement as he perches on Maddie’s knee, eyes wide. Maddie feels the same.
“What’s his name?” she asks the nurse.
“Evan. Your parents’ daemons are still deciding on his daemon’s name.” She steps away to give them privacy, busying herself with nurse things Maddie isn’t interested in. Maddie only has eyes for Evan.
“Hi Evan,” she croons. He’s quiet in her hold, sound asleep. Maddie wants to keep holding him forever.
“Can I?” Traxin asks, hopping a few times before flitting to her shoulder, head tilting back and forth as he takes in the babies in her arms. He shifts again, unable to keep his form in his excitement. His puppy stage is nearing not-a-puppy-anymore, and he nearly knocks her from the chair as he settles at her side, nose inching towards the daemon on Evan’s chest. “Can I, Maddie?”
Traxin has never talked much, but Maddie doesn’t mind. It’s always interesting hearing what he has to say. This time makes her laugh.
“She doesn’t even have a name yet,” Maddie reminds him, pressing him back with her elbow. She drops her voice to a whisper. “But soon, I think. We get to be the first.”
“Oldest sibling rights,” Traxin says, smug. Maddie grins. That grin drops abruptly as snippets of conversation flit across the room.
“You’ve seen me, the baby is as healthy as we hoped he’d be, now go stay with our son. He’s all alone—”
“—only for a little while, he’s fine—”
“What if something happens while you’re gone? We’re supposed to be helping him, Evan is supposed to—”
“Margaret,” Phillip hisses.
“Just go,” she snaps, “or I’ll go myself.”
Maddie’s arms tighten around Evan. It was supposed to be her. She’d offered to stay with Daniel.
“Mom…I—”
“Just keep holding him, Maddie,” she says, eyes closing with exhaustion. Traxin pulls back, tucking himself half-behind Maddie with a breathy whine. Mom sighs. “Be a good girl and look after your brother.”
Dad flashes Maddie a smile that doesn’t reach his eyes as he passes, Jarah trotting at his heels. It’s not very reassuring. Maddie’s eyes drift to Molin, desperate for some sort of comfort or something, anything to cut the tension in the room that feels thicker than the humidity. Molin stares back, eyes dark and unreadable.
“Her name is Balaine,” he says, quiet. He stares at Maddie a moment more before tucking his beak under his wing.
Then they’re alone. Maddie and Traxin and Evan and…and Balaine.
/This is the first chapter of an AU that I’m working on. I’m planning on posting it on AO3. I’ll add the link once it’s published. Anyways, I hope you enjoy it!/
Chapter 1
Elizabeth wasn’t sure what to expect when she went out looking for a demon. Maybe for the building to be covered in blood, or for it to be dark. She wasn’t expecting it to be a bar out of everything, and well cleaned as well.
“Hello? Anyone here,” Elizabeth calls out as she slowly walks forward. “I’m here to make a deal. I-I need help.”
She looks around as her eyes fall on a bulletin board, which holds seven posters on it. Each one had a drawing and a name under it.
“Well, well, well. What do we have here? Don’t you know that pretty girls like you can cause trouble,” a male voice says.
Elizabeth whirls around to see a short, blonde-hair man standing behind the counter. His emerald green eyes seem to look straight through her. A smile appears as he walks around the bar and towards her.
“I gotta say, you got my attention. So, what kind deal made you come all the way here? You must be desperate if you're looking for a Demon. I got a feeling that you’re looking for one of the Sins,” he says, tilting his head slightly to the right.
“Y-yes. I need their help,” Elizabeth tells him. “They are my only hope. Do you know where they are?”
“Nope! I have no clue. Anyways, what deal were you planning on making with one of them?”
“Any deal. As long as they can help me, I’ll do anything!”
“Anything, eh?”
“Yes!”
“So, would you sell your soul to one of them?”
“If that’s the price I have to pay...I would do it in a heartbeat,” Elizabeth says, determination in her eyes.
“Alright. What do I need to do?”
“W-what?”
“You heard me. What is it that you need me for?”
“Wait...you’re one of the Sins?!”
“Yup! You’re looking at the Dragon Sin of Wrath, Meliodas. So, what do I need to do to help you? It’ll help me gauge your price for enlisting me,” Meliodas says as he takes a seat at a table.
“My father have been poisoned. The people who are behind it are now running the kingdom. They are harming the people and are forcing them to prepare for a war that they intend to start,” Elizabeth explains as Meliodas crosses his arms.
“So you want me to stop them?”
“Y-yes. And save my father as well. The poison they used is unknown.”
“You think it’s a poison from the other world, right?”
“M-maybe. I-I also heard one of the men talking to someone named Fraudrin,” Elizabeth mentions as Meliodas stiffens.
“Fraudrin? You sure you heard them correctly.”
“Yes. Do you know him?”
“Sadly yes. Alright, I’ll make a deal with you,” Meliodas says as he stands up.
“R-really?! Thank you! So, what is the deal?”
“My side of the deal is, I’ll help you save your father and stop the people in charge. As for your side, I get you,” Meliodas says.
“W-what?”
“You heard me. Once this is all over, I get you,” Meliodas repeats. “So Elizabeth, do we have a deal?”
Meliodas holds his right hand out as green flames surround it. Elizabeth looks at his hand, then at his face. Taking a deep breath, she reaches out and shakes his hand. Elizabeth winces as pain appears around her right wrist. Just as quickly as it came, it disappears. The flames disappear and Eizabeth spots an intricate tattoo wrapping around her wrist. She recognizes the symbol of a dragon at the center of the tattoo.
“There, the deal has been made. The only way for it to disappear is if either of us die or I end it. Also, if you don’t keep up your side of the deal, you’ll be cursed. Anyways, shall we head on out? We should start finding the others if we want to save your father and kingdom,” Meliodas says as he walks towards the bar.
“The others?”
“Yup! We’ll need to get all of the Sins together to stop them. I can’t do this alone,” Meliodas tells her.
“Will I have to make a deal with them as well?”
“Nope. I know that they’ll lend me a hand. It’s an unspoken rule between all of us. We help each other help if we think we won’t be able to do the deal on our own. Most demons have a few trusted ‘friends’ that they can count on when they are in too deep or over their heads,” Meliodas explains. “Are you going to stand there or are you coming?”
“W-where are we going?”
“To the Demon Realm of course! It’ll be quicker to find them there than trying to find what ties them to the Mortal Realm. Merlin’s move around and I think Ban’s is underground.”
“Wait...so the bar is your tie to the Mortal Realm?”
“Yup! Did you think that you could summon just any demon from here?”
“W-well, the rumors were that you could,” Elizabeth says as she trails off.
“Sheesh. Humans nowadays. Now then, we need to pack some food and clothing. Let’s hope Hawk is up for a trip,” Meliodas says as he grabs a bag.
“Hawk?”
“Yeah. He’s a talking pig that lives in the Demon Realm. He usually stays with me or Ban,” Meliodas tells Elizabeth as he puts some food into the bag. “You got clothing? I don’t have any that’ll fit you.”
“Ah...y-yes! I have some clothing in my bag.”
“Good. Let’s go,” Meliodas says as he grabs Elizabeth’s arm.
He then drags her to the basement.
“Will it be alright to leave the bar unattended?”
“Yes. No one will be able to enter without me in it,” Meliodas says as he stops in front of two black doors that have green symbols on it. “Alright then, stay close to me. Not all demons will be friendly or nice to you. They’ll probably won’t kill you because we are in a contract, but you never know.”
“O-ok.”
“Great! Here we go,” Meliodas says as he opens the door.
Elizabeth takes a nervous breath as she takes her first steps on her journey to save everyone and everything she loves.
