I have read all the posts that gun laws don't work. I accept that but what about a all out ban on all guns. No guns no bullets nothing. Wouldn't that prevent gun violence? Where would bad people get guns if there weren't any?
Thank you for the question.
I think to start the discussion I would invite you to research the effects of the 18TH Amendment to the Constitution. The thirteen years following the institution of prohibition illustrates the futility of almost any ban.
Lets say hypothetically that a total ban on firearms and ammunition was instituted along with, I assume, confiscation. The first question would be what segment of the population would be the most affected? The answer is the law abiding. Criminals by definition do not obey laws and would be the first to take advantage of the black market in firearms that would inevitably spring up following a ban. Consider that narcotics are banned under law yet anyone can go to just about any metropolitan area and buy as much as they want. The only limit is money. The very same groups that smuggle narcotics into the country would not overlook the income stream of illegal firearms. The catch is the weapons wouldn't be Glocks, or Smith & Wessons, or Rugers they would most likely be Chinese QZL-193s, or Type 56 and 63 rifles. Selective fire weapons capable of full automatic would be as easy to get as cocaine. In addition there would be no way of knowing who purchased the weapons.
No a ban would only disarm law abiding people and leave them defenseless.
