“Pert” which Webster’s defines as trim and chic, is hardly a word to describe Barbara Cook now.

Her face is still baby-doll smooth, her blonde hairstyle is almost ingenuish, and her wide blue eyes seemed frightened when she entered the small back room of the nightclub. She looks around shyly and begins to sing over the background of her piano accompaniment and the words still murmuring around her.

Before she had finished, the audience was on its feet, the floor around her was littered with flowers, and she wasn’t pert— she was beautiful.
