Barcelona 2014...
Barcelona Eats & Sips
The above picture accurately depicts every single meal in Barcelona. I would literally order my own plate of patatas bravas..... for lunch & dinner. You can't judge me, I was on vacation.
My friends and I take a lot of time to do SERIOUS research on restaurants, no matter where we go. I made lists, they made lists...I actually think at certain points in the trip we were even more excited for the food than the sights. Before we even took off from Newark, we had already discussed Jamon 20 times. Enjoy our culinary adventure through Barcelona below.
Our first meal in Barcelona at Sensi Tapas.
Patatas Bravas & Jamon Croquettes
Pan Con Tomate - This is addicting, particularly with Jamon on top.
True THAT
Paella
On our first day sightseeing, Esther (or as we nicknamed her, "Tapa", due to how many times a day she suggested we get one) found Txapela, which has an extensive list of tapas or "pinchos" that were numbered so it makes it very easy to order.
These pinchos were all incredible but my favorite is that mini panini on the left which was baby asparagus, jamon, and sheep's cheese...melted.
No caption necessary. I told Esther I would split these with her... I only gave her one.
Chök is a place I found by searching the #barcelona hashtag on Instagram. I was so excited when we randomly walked past it on our first day. There's really no words to describe their doughnuts and "kronuts". The dough was light and fluffy. Chock definitely gives Dominique Ansel a run for his money.
Lindsay got the doughnut that looks like Creme Brûlée. It was at Chok that we learned about Crema Catalana, the Catalan version of Creme Brûlée. After we tried it, we were hooked.
Mini Doughnuts on a stick.
Yes, that green stuff is crushed Pistachios.
Chocolate Pasta
My Pistachio Kronut. There are no words I could use to properly describe this to you.
We found this adorable candy store called Happy Pills that sells candy in pill bottles, for all different ailments.
Lindsay bought pills "to feel the magic of Barcelona".
I felt that this was the right prescription for me.
Drinks at the W in Barceloneta. I saw pictures of this place on Kristina Bazan's blog and knew we needed to check it out. The pool area was incredible and overlooked the Mediterranean. The drinks were pricey but delicious.
The club on the 26th floor of the W Hotel has amazing views of the city and the ocean.
The first floor lounge of the W.
Esther told us about this place well in advance. Chupitos has a shot list that goes for miles. All of the shots are 2 Euro, fun and delicious. It's a great place to go earlier in the night before heading to a club.
Harry Potter shot
Boy Scout shot
This was a shot we took with Pop Rocks candy. The bartender filled our hands with Pop Rocks and told us to put them in our mouth and leave it on our tongue. He then told us to take the shot, cover our ears and jump up and down. The Pop Rocks started to explode and it sounded like a volcano in our mouths, which was cool... but we looked like absolute fools.
La Boqueria!!! If I lived in Barcelona I feel like I would constantly be at this market buying fresh fish and produce. It is incredibly vibrant and colorful, buzzing with people!
If you visit, definitely get a smoothie.
I mean really you could get any animal part you could imagine.
When I saw this I smiled. Some people like popcorn and candy as a snack. Me? I'll take Jamon slices and queso any day.
My friend's boyfriend suggested that we go to Irati Taverna Basca in the Gothic Quarter. It is another Tapas restaurant that places a toothpick in each of their pinchos. After you are done eating, they count the number of toothpicks in your plate so they know how much to charge you. The food is fantastic. The cold pinchos are in the window and a waitress continually brings the hot pinchos out every 10 minutes or so. If you get the chance, you need to try the Gruyere croquette, which the waitress should bring out hot.
The best tapa (pincho) I had while in Spain was the one on top of this picture. It was a Spanish creamy goat cheese topped with blueberry jam. It was to die for. If you visit Irati, get this!
My second favorite tapa from Irati is the egg tortilla stuffed with crab and topped with garlic aioli and chives.
On our last morning in Barcelona, we were all craving a big breakfast before our 3 hour train ride to Madrid. Esther found Artisa Barcelona just a few streets down from our hotel. It was delicious and filled with great culinary souvenirs. I found some great Spanish saffron for my mom here.
This may look like your average ham & cheese panini....but it was SO much more than that. I still dream of it. I'm not kidding.
#Jamon
The largest and coolest vending machine I've ever seen down in a Metro station.
I wish they sold these in The States! Jamon flavored Ruffles
Found the cutest outdoor market in the Gothic Quarter. I bought mushrooms and fresh cheese for my parents. I love that they let you taste everything before buying anything.
I tried as many Spanish beers as I could. They were all delicious. San Miguel Fresca, Estrella, Mahou.
Dinner at yet another tapas restaurant.
I read about Fideua while doing research about Spain. I learned that it was similar to Paella, a typical dish of Valencia. It’s made with short pasta and fish and usually served with a garlic aioli. The one we had was made with cuttlefish and squid ink. It was different and delicious.
Esther and I could not get enough tortilla. My favorite is a tortilla with potatoes. This one has potatoes and chorizo.
After Chupitos, we went to Opium and Shoko which are both on the beach in Barceloneta. They were both absolutely gorgeous inside. I want to go back in the summer!
Lindsay and I had ice cream for lunch one day. We both got Crema Catalana. It was to die for.
Aquesta Champions, la guanyarem!… o algo así
