Most days, Regulus doesn’t feel alive. Sirius always says he doesn’t need to be human to be alive. But how can he be a living being when he doesn’t have a beating heart, can’t taste anything that isn’t blood and doesn’t feel the passage of time?
Regulus blinks and forces himself to focus on his book.
He can feel someone approaching him, but he doesn’t look up. He hopes the person will leave when they notice Regulus’s lack of interest. But they don’t. They stop right in front of his table.
Regulus gets a whiff of the stranger’s scent. The freshness of grass, the sweetness of tea and the heady rush of blood.
Regulus’ head swims.
He looks up.
Standing before him is the most beautiful person Regulus has seen in his long, exhausting life. “We’re reading the same book,” The stranger says.
Regulus looks down at the stranger’s hand and yes, it seems that they’re reading the same book. But he doesn’t see how that’s any of his concern. He raises a brow.
The stranger gives him a sheepish look. “Thought we could read together.”
Regulus wants to refuse. Human interaction isn’t his forte. He doesn’t get friendly with people he might prey on one day. But the stranger’s earnest eyes make it impossible for Regulus to turn him away. He nods slowly.
The stranger beams at him and takes the seat beside him. “I’m James,” He says.
Regulus can’t help but offer a smile of his own, “Regulus.”
