Since birth, his father’s expectations weighed heavily upon his shoulders and he spent years being the best simply because it was all he knew. The approval he longed for was always couched in quasi-motivation to do better. Twelve OWLs was good but not great and his impeccable linguistic skills were nice but did not compare to “having the proper accent and inflection, Barty.” It was not until he joined Lord Voldemort that Bartemius felt the appreciation he’d so long been denied and he quickly worked his way up the ladder. To the Dark Lord, he decided, he would be indispensable. Joining the Order had been easy, too easy, and Barty relishes in taking intelligence back to the Dark Lord as he is rewarded each time. The best part? Doing it under his father’s insipid and domineering nose. He often eschews etiquette when among those his own age, preferring to be honest - or at least appearing to be so. Barty’s demeanor is more frank than most of his contemporaries and he is always available with a sarcastic quip. He has rarely had trouble making a friend, though his affable grin hides a lifetime’s worth of secrets.

At Hogwarts, they’d been inseparable, two scions from influential pureblood families with more money than they knew what to do with. But time, and life, has changed things. Madeleine Bulstrode

He was never supposed to like Madeleine, the woman who’d been at Beauxbatons and preferred the French to the homeland of her forefathers. He’d heard she was uppity, nearly glacial, but after making her laugh with a sarcastic jab, Barty had decided he rather liked her. He does not understand why she has distanced herself from him of late and while he is loathe to admit much, Barty has found himself brooding because of it.

Coraline Parkinson

Barty has always known Coraline’s secret, hearing it at a young age while hiding behind the screen in his drawing room as their mothers - close friends since childhood - spoke of the halfblood in the Parkinson line. Though Barty has never told Coraline he knows of her blood status outright, he cannot help but make remarks in her presence to see if he can make her flinch.
