Last night I was watching the show The Mysteries of the Museum. The episode went back to Basel, Switzerland in 1474 where a rooster mysteriously an egg. Legends state that if a rooster lays an egg, it’s due to a pact being made between itself and the devil. This would lead to the hatching of a creature called a Basilisk. A Basilisk was made up of the body of a dragon or a serpent with the head of a rooster that could kill anyone with just a glance. You can imagine the chaos this idea caused within the populace.
That got me to thinking. There was a Marvel villain that I believed was called the Basilisk. And yes, there was. The villain called the Basilisk was a common burglar named Basil Elks (witty) who gained his powers when a Kree gem known as the Alpha Stone was destroyed in his vicinity during a heist. The gem granted him powers attributed to a Basilisk such as superhuman strength, endurance and vision enhancements in the form of heat and cold vision and the ability to fly via propulsion from eye beams.
Another Kree gem called the Omega Stone heightened his powers in the form of improved flight, teleportation and psionic energies. He was mainly active during the 1970s and was one of the many villains killed by The vigilante Scourge of the Underworld. He was created by legendary duo Len Wein and Gil Kane and his first appearance was Marvel Team Up Volume 1 issue 16.
Oh, and what happened to the rooster from 15th Century Basel, Switzerland? Well it didn’t end well for the rooster. It stood trial and was found guilty. He would be burnt at the stake along with its egg 🥚🐔🔥. I kid you not.
