Bottling Day | Batch 15 | Apple Beer 2 | Tasting Notes
I bottled the apple beer 2 featuring apple juice, pilsen malt, saaz hops and US-05 American ale yeast.
With a final gravity of 1.007 this one has an ABV of about 4.1%. You could say this beer is like, totally sessionable. That’s fine for the Bowmans.
This batch of apple beer tasted a little bit different than what I expected: very malty. Pretty sweet. Spicy cinnamon from the saaz hops. Slight tartness from the apple juice. Overall the flavor reminds me of a brown ale, such as Newcastle, but slightly tart combined with something almost like soda like in sweetness, like a root beer. Not very bitter at all.
In summary, batch 15 is extremely easy to drink but missing something. If I do this again, I will probably just do a 30 minute boil, use perle hops for bittering, and then add the saaz at 15 minutes.
So yeah, the results are different than I hoped and just about as underhopped as I feared. On the other hand, during this stretch of near 100 degree SoCal weather, my failed result tastes crisper with each day of bottle conditioning and is going fast.
