The Doctor said the two of you were going to the 1970s. The plan was to go see a band that he swore you would love. He went on all morning about how 1979 was a great year for Earth. You listened intently, soaking up his excitement. The two of you had been traveling together for a while now and you loved every moment of it. He taught you how to see the extraordinary in everything, and you taught him how to forgive himself and hope again.
On occasion, you felt as though there was something unspoken between the two of you. It was found in the lingering gazes, late-night conversations, and in the general intimacy of your relationship. To say you didn’t fancy him would be a lie. He was the Doctor, last of the timelords, kind, mysterious, brave, and easy on the eyes. But it was more than that, it was about the way he made you feel like you too could be extraordinary. He had all of time and space at his disposal and still, he chose you. Even if he had no romantic feelings for you, it was enough to be his companion.
When the TARDIS landed, you were expecting 1979. After all, that is what the Doctor had been blabbering on about all morning. What you got instead was 1879. Not only were the two of you in 1879, but you were surrounded by royal guards with guns pointed at you.
“You will explain your presence and the nakedness of this girl” the captain of the guard commanded in a heavy Scottish accent.
“Oh, are we in Scotland?” the Doctor asked in excitement.
“How can you be ignorant of that?” the guard questioned.
“I’m sorry sir, I’m dazed and confused after chasing this wee lad over hill and dale” he lied with an improvised Scottish accent.
“Identify yourselves” the guard ordered.
“I am doctor James McKiernan. I have my credentials if I may” the Doctor answered gesturing to his pocket.
When the guards bought his story you both were asked to approach the carriage by whoever it held. Against his better judgment, the guard allowed it. You were shocked to see that the carriage held none other than Queen Victoria herself. She decided that the two of you would be accompanying her.
The Doctor asked why she was traveling by road. The Queen informed that there was an assassination attempt and that she often felt safer going by carriage. After continuing the brief conversation, you and the Doctor were asked to walk behind the carriage and continue to the townhouse where they would be staying the night.
When you arrived, you were led to a room with a telescope. The Queen was telling you the backstory behind it as the Doctor analyzed it. He was making minor criticisms and caught himself complimenting the machine as whimsical and interesting. It was then that the queen began to discuss the legend of the wolf that had brought her husband to this village before. The Doctor’s interest was immediately peaked, however, she was soon cut off by one of the guards who had requested that each of you go to your courters and prepare for supper.
You were asked by the Queen to change into something more fitting. You were slightly embarrassed as you had been dressed to go to a concert, not to meet a Queen. When you arrived in your room you looked through the dresser. There were so many different dresses. You were opening to the door to the closet when you saw a girl sitting inside. She was a maid who looked completely terrified. You pulled her out and sat her on your bed having her explain what happened.
You assured her that everything was going to be alright, the two of you just had to make it to the Doctor. The only problem with that was that his room was on the other side of the building. It wasn’t long before you came across a guard laying on the floor.
“Is he dead?” she shrieked.
You bent down and checked for a pulse, “He’s just unconscious, must’ve been drugged or something.”
The two of you didn’t make it much further before you were drugged and grabbed by men clothed in black.
The Doctor was sitting at the table entertaining the Queen when they were informed that you would be delayed due to a complication in finding a better dress. The doctor dismissed it, saying he knew that you could take care of yourself. He then redirected his energy to Robert, the house owner, asking for him to share the story.
With some hesitation, he relayed the story of the beast that went from man to wolf on the full moon. He then went on to explain how his father was doing research with the Brethren before he died mysteriously on a full moon like the one tonight. He continued telling the story, it didn’t take much longer for the Doctor to piece it all together.
Within the next minute, a lot occurred. The Guard was aiming his gun at the man who had been posing as a waiter. Just then they all heard a wolf howl. The Doctor realized that you were not simply delayed, but in very real and imminent danger. Robert accompanied him wanting to find his wife. The Queen stayed behind in the protection of her guard.
When the Doctor found you, there were many others that were all chained. He quickly used his sonic to free them. Catching glimpses of the caged Beast as it was turning into a wolf. When all were free, he approached the werewolf which was now starting to break through its’ cage. He was so mesmerized. He obviously had heard the lore, but this was something he had never seen before.
You pulled him away just as it broke free lurching at him, “Doctor, we have to go”.
He snapped out of his momentary gaze and started running. Blocking the door off behind them. The women all ran upstairs to hide and the men took up arms in order to defend the house from the beast. The Doctor tried to warn them that it was pointless, that they would all die. But the stood their ground wanting to fight for queen and country.
You, the Doctor, and Robert went back to check on the queen. You desperately tried to ignore the screams and gunshots that proved the Doctor right. The Queen met you in the hall, explaining that the captain protected her life with his. The four of you ran and took cover having multiple close calls. You locked yourselves in Robert’s father’s study and the Wolf seemed unable to enter. The Doctor was very confused by this and started looking around. He discovered the entire room was laced with wolfsbane. That meant that his father must’ve known that the wolf was real. He was prepared for this attack. But if that was true….
Suddenly the Doctor started rummaging through the papers on the desk, searching for anything that could prove his theory that this house was a trap for the wolf. While he was doing this, Robert was watching the door. You were trying to console the Queen who could not believe what she had just seen.
“That’s it!” the Doctor exclaimed.
“The telescope isn’t a telescope at all. It is a magnification machine. It is meant to magnify the moon’s energy to kill the wolf.”
“Wouldn’t that just make it stronger?” you asked.
“At this magnification, the wolf would drown in it until it would cease to exist entirely.” He explained.
“Come on we’ve got to go,” he said whisking you towards the door.
“I’m coming with you” the Queen spoke.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea, your Majesty. You are the one it is after, best to stay here where you are protected.” The Doctor advised.
“I said I am coming with you. As you stated it is me that it wants and it will be me that ensures that it meets its demise.”
The Doctor was about to reply, but the queen stood and said. “Now that’s an order.”
He didn’t like it, but he didn’t argue. He sent Robert to get his wife and the other women into the study where they would all be safe. And then the three of you were off. The Doctor in front and you in back. You had almost made it when the wolf rounded the corner. You turned to face it, wanting to by the Doctor and the queen more time. The wolf stopped abruptly.
“You’re like me” it growled.
“What does that mean,” you asked shakily.
“Bad Wolf.” It growled before starting again.
You were frozen in place trying to figure out what it meant. Luckily the Doctor had noticed you weren’t behind Queen Victoria and went back for you pulling you inside the door and barricading it.
“Are you alright? Did it hurt you?” he asked scanning you over for any signs of injury. You were still in shock and barely acknowledges he was there. He quickly pulled out his sonic and waved it about your head.
“I’m fine” you answered snapping out of it.
“Good, now help me position this at the door.”
“And what do you want me to do?” the Queen asked.
“Stand here and don’t move until I say so” he answered.
You and the doctor were cranking the lever as fast as you could. The wolf was starting to breakthrough. “Faster!” he yelled over the commotion.
Just as the wolf broke through and lunged towards the queen the Doctor opened the glass and hit it with the beam. It was frozen for a moment before disappearing with a final howl.
“Are you alright?” he asked the queen as he helped her off the floor, immediately noticing her hand. “Did it bite you?” he asked.
“No, it was from the wood of the door.” She answered.
“Let me see,” he said. But she immediately pulled her hand away.
“I said it was okay.” She snapped.
You and the Doctor went upstairs to check on everyone else and to inform them that it was mostly over. The guards started to awake and quickly regained control from the Brethren. They handled what was left of the remains and made sure the queen was safe.
The queen then called on you and the Doctor. She honored you both and then vanished you. “But we just saved your life” you argued.
“And that is why I am sparing yours. The two of you are not from here. I don’t know what you are, but you seek out terror, blasphemy, and death. You consort with the stares and with magic and I will have none of it. I hope you will go forward and consider how you have strayed so far from what is good. Consider the penalties of this life you lead and how much longer you can expect to survive.”
With that, you were escorted back to the TARDIS. “You know it does explain the fact that Queen Victoria began the strain of hemophilia. Her parents didn’t have it, no one had it before her. But now it is in the royal blood” the Doctor theorized.
“Are you saying it was caused by the bite? That the Royal family are werewolves?”
“I mean not yet. A genetic mutation like that would take hundreds of years.”
“No.” you laughed in disbelief.
“Think about it. How much they value privacy, how the schedule everything maybe around the full moon, they love hunting, their crowns are gold, never silver.” He continued.
“The royal family are werewolves” you laughed. You howled as you entered the TARDIS. The doctor joined in. And then he directed the TARDIS away.
You entered your room just recounting all that had happened that day. It had said BadWolf, but that was over wasn’t it? You wanted to ask the doctor, but not right now. Right now, you wanted to shower, change, and sleep.
