Stop Demoting Masterclass Friendships To Mediocre Romances: A Manifesto

Today, we are talking about how fandom culture is actively allergic to the beauty of platonic soulmates.
Let’s be completely blunt: modern fandom has an emotional intelligence problem.
Somewhere along the line, we collectively decided that the highest form of intimacy between two fictional characters is romantic love. If two characters share a traumatic past, look at each other with deep understanding, or literally risk their lives for one another, the immediate response from the dash is: "Oh, they are dynamic-sorting-algorithm-style in love."
And honestly? It’s boring. It’s cheapening. It’s a complete downgrade.
By insisting that every profound connection must be romantic, we are inadvertently implying that platonic love is just a lesser, incomplete version of romance. We are treating friendship like it’s just the waiting room for a relationship. And I am tired of it! Let’s look at the absolute gold standards of platonic soulmates that people keep trying to romanticize away:
1. Raven and Beast Boy (Teen Titans 2003)
The animated series gave us absolute poetry. You have a girl whose entire life is dictated by suppressing her emotions, and a boy who uses humor to mask his deep-seated fear of abandonment. They do not understand each other at first. They clash. But over five seasons, they build a bridge of absolute, unshakeable trust. When Raven lets Beast Boy into her mind, it isn't a romantic confession—it is an act of terrifying platonic vulnerability. Forcing them into a standard boyfriend/girlfriend box completely flattens the sheer gravity of a clown and a goth deciding to be each other's emotional anchors.
2. Emily Prentiss and JJ (Criminal Minds)
The absolute peak of "found family" workplace loyalty. These two women survive literal serial killers, psychological warfare, and fake deaths. The beauty of Prentiss and JJ is that their bond is built on absolute mutual respect, professionalism, and an unspoken understanding of the horrors they witness daily. When you try to force a romantic narrative onto them, you miss the entire point of women in high-stress fields building an unbreakable sisterhood that acts as their sole shield against a dark world. They don't need to be dating to be the most important women in each other's lives.
3. Katara and Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Oh, I know the Zutara shippers are going to come for my head in the notes for this one, but hear me out. The "Southern Raiders" episode is a masterclass in platonic intimacy. Katara does not forgive Zuko, but she understands him. They share the unique, devastating grief of losing their mothers to the Fire Nation. When they fight Azula together in the finale, they are operating as two halves of a whole, entirely in sync. It is a bond forged in fire, grief, and redemption. Making it romantic actually ruins the political and emotional weight of their alliance. They are icons of platonic healing.
4. Arcee and Jack (Transformers Prime)
A giant alien motorcycle warrior and a human teenager. This relationship is built on a foundation of intense mutual responsibility and trauma processing. Arcee has lost partner after partner; Jack is thrust into a war he doesn’t understand. They are partners in the truest, most legalistic sense of the word. Trying to overlay romantic tropes onto a deeply complex, cross-species partnership grounded in protection, mentorship, and survival is just bizarre. It completely erases how beautiful it is for two vastly different beings to find absolute safety in one another.
Platonic intimacy can be fierce. It can be messy. It can be devastatingly fiery, fiercely loyal, and deeply emotional. A friendship can be the central, most important relationship in a character's life without them ever needing to hold hands or confess their love under the stars.
Stop treating friendship like a consolation prize. Start celebrating the platonic soulmates who choose to stay, not because of biological attraction or romantic obligation, but out of pure, unadulterated respect.
