CN: Self-injury, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), autistic meltdowns, fixation
Does anyone have advice for preventing head and brain injury during meltdowns and for "safe" fixation?
Unfortunately, I have increasing violent meltdowns. I repeatedly hit myself in the head and hit my head against walls, floors etc. I always have swellings all over my head. I've had multiple concussions in the last few months.
A doctor did a brain MRI on me about a year ago. The results were good but I've had many meltdowns after that MRI was taken. I am worried about TBI (traumatic brain injury). This is because of the force I use and because I've noticed a sharp increase in "scatterbrainedness" and speech issues. forget words or mix them up.
I don't have any self control for most part of my meltdowns. However, I've twice managed to switch to hair pulling and scratching my face after some time — however, the scratching is not much better. It's extremely visible and leaves scars.
For that reason, my fiancée/caregiver always has to fixate me. She does that by laying on top of me, grabbing my wrists and pinning me down with her hands, legs and body until it stops and I go into stupor. Oftentimes, that leads to me hurting her unintentionally. It also goes beyond her physical strength.
- Do you struggle with similar issues? If so, do you also feel like the SI "has" to target the head? If so, how do you deal with that?
- Do you have recommendations for replacement behaviour?
- Do you think I should I establish routine medical check-ups — if so, which ones? I live in Germany. Access to medical care isn't an issue for me.
- Do you wear head protection permanently or situation-dependant — if so, which kind(s)? Do you prevent or reduce the risk of TBI any other way?
- What methods of fixation do you use/are used on you?*
I tried to stick to simple language. English is not my first language. Please tell me if you need clarification.
Please do not feel obligated to answer all questions. I am really thankful for any kind of advice. Thank you for your time.
* If you want to tell me that fixation is abusive, save it. She has to fixate me because I am a substantial risk not just to my own safety but my life. Without fixation, I'd by now be severely injured and more likely dead.
