An interesting black sesame dark hot chocolate from Bel Cafe. Topped with activated charcoal whipped cream which is a bit odd, but apparently there are health benefits to that stuff!
Name of specialty hot chocolate: "Black Magic"

Holiday at Bel Cafe
Halloween is just around the corner but Christmas cannot come any sooner. To feed my excitement for Christmas, Bel Cafe invited a few of us to their holiday treat sampler. Chef Wayne Kozinko has made some fantastic holiday items, which are wonderful treats for yourself or gifts for those you love!
We were greeted with fantastic hospitality and rich egg nog lattes as the rainy day set in. As we were chatting away and waiting for the treats to arrive, we were all given a taster of their new pumpkin pie ice cream.
With little chunks of pie crust and pumpkin, their creamy ice cream is a seasonal offering that cannot be missed. With lots of spices, it’s like a taste of fall in every spoonful.
As our eggnogs arrived, so did the cookies. A beautifully organized plethora of colourful peppermint macarons, linzer cookies topped in icing sugar, and shortbread cookies whipped to perfection. Taking a nibble of the shortbread cookie, it instantly melted in my mouth. So rich and flakey, it’s nothing like any other shortbread you’ve had before. The linzer cookies we phenomenal. Filled with a tangy raspberry jam filling, the biscuit is filled with your usual spices like cinnamon and cloves as well as chunks of hazelnuts. The peppermint macaroons was saved for last and fancifully coloured, went well with the eggnog latte. With a light mint flavour, it’s a very clean flavour that would be great with some hot chocolate.Looking for a conversation piece for a meeting or party? Bel Cafe will make a macaroon “tree” that is adorable and eatable.
Our last treat was their Christmas cake. Don’t be mistaken, it’s not your usual dry and overly sweet cake. Bel Cafe’s Christmas cake is moist and has a fantastic combination of alcohols. It takes 3 weeks to 1 month for the dried fruits (like orange peel and raisins) to soak in the combination of rum, brandy and orange liqueur. The semi sweet marzipan adds a bit of sweetness that ties it all together. I think this would be a fantastic cake to accompany a spiced mulled wine or warm apple cider.
As a fan of Bel Cafe’s cakes, their holiday treats did not disappoint. This is only a selection of what they may be offering for the holidays this year. You can pick up all of these things starting November 1st.

Bel Café Celebrates The Holiday Season With Exceptional Sweet Treats
Christmas is coming to David Hawksworth’s downtown Bel Café
Fall has arrived and there is a hint of excitement that the holidays are just around the corner. With the leaves turning a rich shade of red, Bel Café invites you to settle down in their cozy café and enjoy some festive cheer with a new range of Yuletide-inspired desserts that will be available from November 1.
Indulge this holiday season with one of Pastry Chef Wayne Kozinko’s special seasonal treats. Add a sweet twist to the countdown to Christmas with Chef’s butter tarts ($5.50 each), or go continental with raspberry Linzer Cookies ($8.50 for a box) and spiced whipped shortbread ($7 for a box); beautifully wrapped in festive boxes tied with ribbon ideal for gifting.
Take home a delicious decorative and stylish macaron tree that is good enough to eat; this gorgeously festive red, green and white candy cane-flavoured creation consists of macarons with white chocolate decorations (small $80 or large $130). Festivities continue with rich classic and fruity Christmas cake ($15), which is lovingly created months in advance to give the dried fruit opportunity to soak up the delicious boozy juices of the cake mix. For little ones or kids at heart, pick up a milk chocolate Santa ($15) created in house as an afternoon treat or the perfect stocking stuffer.
Stop by to warm up with a seasonal sip of eggnog latte (from $5.20) or opt for the spirited version with rum ($8) – all made in-house by the Bel Café team and served by their talented baristas. Pick up a box of the festive-themed candy cane macarons ($18 for box of 9) – a perfect hostess gift for those countless holiday parties.

Put a spring in your step with tantalizing Easter treats at About Bel Café
Bel Café offers Easter classics and new macaron flavour just in time for Easter.
Hop over to David Hawksworth’s BelCafé and indulge in Easter treats and new spring sweets, including the Apple Pie macaron, lime and coconut cake, dark chocolate caramelized hazelnuts and milk chocolate-covered almonds. Get them before they’re gone, a seasonal treat that won’t be around for long!
I did exactly that yesterday, except maybe the hopping part. I did hop up onto a stool and seated myself right in the middle of the bustling cafe. I sampled almost every wonderful Easter treat at Bel Cafe, actually I sampled some more than once because they were so tasty. Everything was absolutely delicious. Nothing like a hot cross bun and a cup of herbal tea or an espresso to go with it. The sun was shining and there was a constant stream of happy customers.
Bel’s famous hot cross buns ($2.80) to take home to share with loved ones. These traditional treats are a must-have for the holiday. To avoid disappointment, pre-order at BelCafe.com as they sell like hot cakes – or buns – on Easter weekend. Adorable solid chocolate rabbits ($12.80) are available to take home as well – unless you finish it en route! And the pastel-coloured Easter themed marshmallows ($6) make a soft, bouncy treat for children and adults.
Voted by Bel Café fans, the newest macaron flavour to adorn our shelves is Apple Pie ($2 each, $16 for eight). Made for sharing, get on someone’s good side with the lime and coconut cake ($12.50), which is reminiscent of tropical flavours and perfect for springing our taste buds back to life. For smaller bites, try Bel’s delightfully packaged chocolate-covered confections that make the perfect on-the-go snacks: dark chocolate caramelized hazelnuts ($10.50) and milk chocolate almonds ($9.50). Bel Café’s new spring items will be available from April 14th.
The hot cross buns, marshmallows and chocolate rabbits are available for pre-order starting from March 31st at www.BelCafe.com and in-stores starting from April 7th. Prices include tax.
