There are two types of pots that seemed to do extremely well in this last firing, the ochoko and guinomi. It may have been because they were small they were placed on the edge of the shelf where they were blasted with the largest amount of soda ash. We also figured out the ideal place for pots with Turquoise Oribe and Willy Helix on them should be placed. Once the ground had started to thaw, I became obsessed with the prospect of finally building and firing my own wood kiln. I slavishly put it together, brick by brick all day for a week. My “cut twice, measure once” attitude meant there were some setbacks, but once a couple days of above-freezing temperature hit, I gathered as much wood, axes, and as many friends I could and fired it from morning to night to morning again. The kiln was fired partially by the friendship of Ryo who arrived with a truckload of wood, Tucker, who kept the vigil in the wee hours of the morning, Olive, who kept spirits high, and Clare, who learned how to split wood and made a video (this being a clip of it) especially for this firing. • • • I want to give a very special thanks Elizabeth Macdonald for giving me her soda kiln, if it was not for her generosity this would never have happened. Ryo and I dismantled her kiln in 2017 where the bricks lay dormant in my barn for quite some time. The kiln will be fired up every two months or so (depending on how much work we can produce) and hopefully each firing will be better than the last. The soda firing was a huge success! I am spending the morning grinding the wadding and globs of clay off the bottoms of each pot and then they will get photographed. All of the shibo/gaiwan hybrids have been claimed from my stories along with a few mugs and guinomi. Thank you everyone who picked something out!
