No, it’s not worth that. I’m just experiencing such extreme fatigue that I am wondering if something else is going on. Something dangerous.

it’s fine, it’s not like I’m moderately pissed that a frequent visitor made a joke that they were now vindicated because they had been saying that they smelled gas for ages. Or that one of my roomates, who is the homeowner, admitted that he occasionally smelled gas.

Character writing meme: Spike and Garak

Pick a character I’ve written and I will explain the top ~three to five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them. 

Garak:

He’s got a very dry sense of humor. He’s a funny person, but it’s often in terms of commentary and reaction.

He puts Cardassia above all, always. Whatever his other concerns and motivations, Cardassia itself is the utmost priority.

He’ll try to understand why decisions are made and actions are taken, but he won’t necessarily try to empathize with the individuals involved. It’s not that he can’t or won’t empathize; it’s that most of the time, he doesn’t consider it important to even try.

He doesn’t hack. He cuts.

Spike:

He operates on a fundamentally different moral and ethical praxis than the humans he tends to interact with. It’s tilted in a different way than Garak’s, who has a set of priorities and responsibilities that are often congruent with those of the people around him. Spike takes it into a much more abstracted direction because nuance is a concept he struggles with, both internally and externally.

He’s capable of deep tenderness and care, while also enjoying killing and eating people. For him, these aren’t mutually exclusive, and he’d wonder why people would think they are.

He’s deeply invested in his own performance and presentation, and how he’s constructed himself, and while he’s bad at lying, he’s got a good grasp of reading people and won’t hesitate to call bullshit.

Exactly. What is extra grating is that at least half of these comments are from people that I consider acquaintances at best.
