a/n: hello everynyan! i'm back with another post, this time it's a little different cuz it's a short story! i honestly can't wait for summer so i decided to make it a summer-y fruity theme 🥹💕 sorry for the long wait on this one, i had a very eventful week and remembered that i still have one exam left to complete [sob] .. buttt, i'm doing my monthly post and that's all that matters! enjoy this oneee 😋😋🩷💚
ꫂ❁ Living in a small, quaint town with lots of sunshine meant berry picking every 3 weeks in the months of June and July in the field that San owns. It's a little tradition between the two of you, giving you a chance to shine your creative skills when baking with these fruits and having your beloved husband enjoy them. The month of July was now approaching. You had your straw hat on that San gave you for your 5th anniversary, a white babydoll dress with delicate lacing and ruffles, and a pair of comfortable sandals. The slight breeze in the warm air gently caressed your hair as you waited patiently for your husband, he had the tendency to take ages when getting ready—but you couldn't really blame him, he wanted to look his best for you after all..
The sound of his soft footsteps could be heard behind you, and when you turned around.. it's like you fell in love with him all over again. His hair was slightly tousled but still presentable, he wore that sheer, white dress shirt that he loved and a pair of flared trousers (as well as his cute little pout of course!).
San held up two large straw baskets, "Are you ready, my love?" He asked, even though he already knew the answer to his question.
You smiled lovingly and took one basket from him, hooking your arm through the handle. "Of course I am, darling. You know how fun this is for us." You bumped his shoulder playfully and he laughed. He pressed a gentle kiss on your forehead and intertwined his fingers with yours. "Well then, let's go."
The sun's rays beamed tenderly onto your skin as you both made your way onto the field—it wasn't too far, just a 10 minute walk. The pleasant sight of the blossoming green grass and the blooming flowers filled your heart with a joy of admiration, not to mention the striking colors of the vibrant and ripe berries laid down atop the bushes and trees. You didn't even realize you stopped in your tracks until San gently tugged your arm.
"My love, why did you stop walking?" He asked, taking in your expression with slight amusement.
You turned your gaze toward him a gentle smile on your face, "Look," You nodded towards the bright field. "All your hard work has paid off, I'm so proud of you." San's cheeks flushed a delicate pink color and he looked away with a chuckle. "There's no need to flatter me, I just did what was needed." He said bashfully.
You giggled at his shyness and continued walking, tugging him along and San obviously followed like a lovesick puppy. The grass was cool and damp and he was the first to step in it. However, you were a little hesitant—there was lots of small bugs and butterflies traveling through the dirt and grass and San knew it made you squeamish if you had accidentally stepped on one.
He noticed your hesitation and sighed, "Sweetheart, come on." He tried to gently guide you into the grass, but you stayed put where you were.
You continued to remain at your spot before San suddenly picked you up bridal style, making you gasp in surprise. He chuckled, "Next time, listen to me."
At last, you saw it—the awaited moment.. the berry zone! San set you on the path that led to the all the bushed and trees, you wasted no time to hurry over there and pick a fruit. A small chuckle escaped from him at your eagerness and he quickly ran after you. San watched lovingly as your lips wrapped around a small strawberry—the berry was unbelievably delicious and had the perfect amount of sweetness to it.
Your eyes widened happily as you ate the rest of the strawberry and you quickly shoved one into San's mouth, taking him by surprise. The flavor of the berry seemed to hit him a little differently, his eyes were closed as he savored the taste of it and he was practically a melting puddle. The fruit seemed to entrance him into a hypnosis as he unknowingly reached for another strawberry and ate it.
San opened one eye, "Darling, you know what I think?" He said, his lips slightly stained with strawberry juice.
"What?" You responded, looking at his dazed expression with a grin. He put on his signature pout, "I think, you should make that Japanese strawberry shortcake I love so much.. Pretty please~" His doe eyes twinkled as he pleaded.
You could never resist his requests, let alone his adorable pout. A breathy chuckle left your lips as you looked back at him, "Of course I can, dearest. Big or small?"
"Big, obviously." He delivered a strawberry flavored kiss to your nose, making it scrunch up cutely. San pulled away and admired the sparkling fruits, "Well, let's get to work, my love."
For the next hour, both of your baskets filled up. Layer by layer, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, and gooseberries filled up in the vast space of both of your baskets as you enjoyed the moment of peace and snacking together.
The sun finally started to set, meaning it was time to go back. The bushes and trees were now empty. Your head rested on your husband's lap as you both laid on the bed of grass. Words weren't exchanged between the two of you in this moment, only gentle touches and loving gestures. One of his hands intertwined with with yours, the other one gently raking and combing through your hair as your eyes remained closed. The bright light of the sun was getting dimmer, but none of you dared to move an inch.
Think about it. Two lovers, the beautiful moment they currently share, and the thought of a delicious Japanese strawberry shortcake..
That sounded berry cute..
