What a fun find! #Repost @brooklynhistory with @get_repost ・・・ Do you ever find yourself craving a certain snack, only to realize that you bought it the day before and it’s already waiting there for your future self? Sometimes #history is a little like that… . . . . . In 1865, someone grabbed an assortment of #newspaper to use as padding between lithographs and their frames; this was a nice surprise for the staff at BHS 150 years in the future! Thanks, past-Brooklynites! . . . . . Thanks to our “Revealing Long Island History” project, BHS's collections staff has been painstakingly inventorying and processing everything from artifacts to paintings to works on paper like this one. . . . . . #Repost @brooklynhistory with @repostapp ・・・ Get a close-up look at grassroots resilience. The photo of the week is an image from the Bernard Gotfryd color slides and photographs collection that depicts people cleaning up a courtyard in the #EastNewYork neighborhood of Brooklyn. Gotfryd was a photojournalist, trained to tell stories through photographs. This photograph stands out for many reasons: the composition, the charming detail of the kids in the window, but also the powerful story it tells about East New York. This Brooklyn neighborhood was hit hard by 20th century urban decline, segregation, and deindustrialization and this photograph depicts one example of the #grassroots efforts by the community to clean up the neighborhood. Bernard Gotfryd was a professional photographer and staff photojournalist at Newsweek for over 30 years, and was a fascinating individual throughout his lifetime. He was born in Poland in 1924 and entered a photography apprenticeship at the start of WWII. He became involved with the Polish resistance and was later imprisoned for his involvement. By the end of the war, he had survived imprisonment in six different concentration camps. In 1945, he immigrated to the United States and continued his photography pursuit while serving in the U.S. Army. Gotfryd traveled all over the world while working at Newsweek, documenting people, places, and events. At BHS, we have 174 photographs by Gotfryd. I've been in the Teen Innovators program for 2 years and I must say this program has really shaped me into a better person. I was able to learn about the rich & interesting history of the Brooklyn Navy Yard . This program has definitely had a major impact on me . I  had the chance to get an internship for the two years I've been in the program which was awesome. I was also able to be a mentor my second year, mentoring other kids about the Brooklyn Navy Yard . With the paid internship at the end I learn professional skills that I can use about anywhere! I will miss being apart of the Teen Innovators as I will be going off to college but one thing I do hope is that it grows for other teens to experience an internship filled with fun and a foundation of learning. I will definitely recommend this program to any teen looking to be part of a family that helps create successful people of the future.

What did you learn from participating in Teen Thursdays?

“I learned about activist and how everyone can be an activist. Some activist are subversive. And, how they would have mock actions [Henry Ward Beecher and Mock Slave Auctions].”

“I learned about different activist and what they have done from Brooklyn.”

“I learned that there was a lot of activist outside of M.L.K.”

“I had learn new thing about the past and how it can connects to the current day.”

“I learn that many of the abolitionist were really like secretive and abolitionist is also a new word.”

Navy Yard Q&A

Today we were visited by the Navy Yard employees, Nicole Tarpi, Counsel, Elliot Matz, Chief Operating Officer, EVP,  and Shani Leibowitz, Senior Vice President, Development and Planning. They were up to answer questions we had for them as well as give advice for our up and coming future. We believe the best advice they gave use was to follow are passion no matter what it is. It’s better to do something you love and not get paid as much as doing something that pays a lot of many but it’s something that you can’t stand. The major take away we got from this is have a sense of perseverance. No matter how hard it gets, we have to push through the obstacles. With that mind set we will all grow to do great things and we’re glad these amazing people taught us that today
