I insist on having coasters. Next to my reading chair, on my desk, in my library, etc. I remember reading in A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Penultimate Peril that evil people do not use coasters, and it has stuck with me into adulthood:

“We observed rings on all the wooden furniture, from people refusing to use coasters. Obviously there are many villains staying in the hotel.”

“...for there was no one on the wooden bench, only a few etched rings from people wicked enough to set down glasses without using coasters.”

I've noticed in your recent outfits that you seem to have a new book on the go almost every day. I just wondered how do you find the time and motivation to read so much? I used to be a huge bookworm but it's something I've really struggled with in recent years as I tend to spend all of my spare time on creative pursuits or watching movies so I just wondered how you balance it all with similar hobbies.

Well... I get asked about it a lot, and I suppose there’s several factors?

I can’t not read. I get weird in a bad way if I don’t read at least a bit every day. Most of the books I read are under 500 pages because I’m impatient (I’m not opposed to longer books but the commitment, it’s why I don’t read series much). As with my movie taste, I like trash! (Don’t know if you’ve looked at my Letterboxd but yeah.) And when you don’t want to think much trash is fun and easy to get through quickly. I love reading good books too and getting lost in them— and I’ll grab a bit of time here and there and often give myself an hour before bed to read every night too.

As for the project and movie thing— I watch a ridiculous amount of movies (usually 2-7 a day) because they’re mostly stupid and make great background noise while I do projects! I draw fast and do projects in short periods of time because I’ll lose interest if I don’t get them done quickly. And right now between summer doldrums and COVID my work schedule is much deader than I would like so I have free time this week. I went through a 342 page book yesterday because I got home from work by 4 and finished watching movies by 8:30 and read for three hours because I needed to take a break from drawing— reading is what I do to wind down since art is work and what I do for a living.

Going through and reorganizing my books, I just realized that I accidentally purchased a second copy of the Silmarillion edition I already had.

Turns out I never looked at the first copy without the dust jacket, and since the new copy didn’t have its jacket I thought it was a different edition...

Arrgghh...preordered Alice isn’t Dead a few weeks ago and just got the confirmation that it’s getting ready to ship. Unfortunately, I just finished The Secret Garden today--in preparation for Alice isn’t Dead--but the book’s estimated arrival is Saturday!

Ugh.

Now what am I going to read?
