Hi, I am in bio 1000 at York University. I finished my midterm1; the mark does not pose out yet, but I felt I already Failed the exam, which counts20% in the course. I am wondering, should I drop the course, then retake or continue studying in this class? And what is the deadline to drop the course without the mark shown on the profile

I would recommend finding out your mark first and then deciding whether you should drop the course or not. You still have until Nov 8 to drop a Fall course.

I switched into History from Kine this year. I completed BIOL 1000. Since it is no longer a requirement for my degree, would I be able to use it to fulfill 3/6 NATS gen ed requirement instead of an elective? (BIOL 1000 is a CCE for the biology based NATS courses)

No it won’t count as a gen ed because it’s not a gen ed, BIOL 1000 is considered a science credit/elective. It being a CCE for a NATS course doesn’t really mean anything related to gen eds, you will still have to do a NATS gen ed, just not the one that’s a CCE.

Biol 1000

Biology 1000 midterm: We did a pratice test with a scantron and the prof put the questions as slides on the board. May be a dumb question but for the actual test I have in a week is it the same format or will we get a physical copy of multiple choice questions on a sheet or is she putting them on the board?

This is something only your prof can answer for sure. I’ve only ever had one professor put the questions up on the screen, but that was for an essay form exam with only 2 questions. Most likely you will get a physical copy for the actual test, and the professor just didn’t want to waste paper/resources on a practice test.

This is a very specific questions but for CHEM1000 and BIOL1000, will professors explain how to write a lab report or will they expect us to already know?

There are no lab reports for CHEM 1000, and the TA will help you to learn to write lab reports for BIOL 1000. Professors are not usually involved in the labs for CHEM/BIOL 1000 & 1001, they only do the lectures.

Hi, is it possible to take BIOL 1000/10001 instead of the NATS requirement if you are a LAPS student?

No, BIOL is considered a science credit, not a gen ed credit.

i have a bio 1000 exam coming up and i honestly don't know how detailed i should study for it from the textbook ? or just look at the slides ? can someone who already did the exam give an idea of how it's going to be like ? thanks in advance

I would recommend studying from the textbook, but if you have Tamara Kelly then you need to read the textbook and the slides as she likes giving questions from both. Her tests/exams are usually quite difficult, so you have to work hard to get an A in her class.

bio 1000 says you need a prerequisite of bio in grade 12 and chem.....what if i only have bio from gr 12 and im going to take chem 1500 in the summer, am i still allowed to take the bio 1000 next semester? will it still count because im for sure going to take the chem, just after bio 1000

For the prereq you only need grade 12 Bio or Chem, you don’t need both. So, yes you can still take BIOL 1000 next semester.

To the anon who was asking about study advice for Biology, sorry it seems like there was a tumblr glitch and your question got deleted. I’ll be happy to give you my advice though:

From my personal experience with first year Biology I found that reading the textbook was very important, so keeping up with assigned readings should be your first priority. I’m a visual learner so I learn better with diagrams, flow charts, etc - that was something I used to study concepts in Bio as well. Watching YouTube videos helps too. You need to know what your study habits are and what works for you. Try writing notes from the textbook, summarise important points, and then go over it and test yourself to see if you understood what the chapter was talking about. Maybe get your friends together for a group study to discuss: the readings, what you didn’t understand, etc - I find that helps too especially when you’re explaining something to someone else.
