Thirty-one days left, Friday, August the 3rd
It all started with three small words.
“I need you”
Your best friend texted you these, in the middle of a Saturday night, when you laid in bed, waiting for your favorite movie to start. Sighing, you grabbed your phone and wrote back.
“Come over, Spiderman starts soon :D”
She didn’t reply but showed up at your front door half an hour later. Her hair was in a messy bun and her makeup was a bis messed up, but you could say she put a lot of effort in it.
“What happened to you!?” you let her in, wrapped a blanket around her wet body, since it’s rainy outside, and guided her to your couch, where you handed her the popcorn bucket you had prepared.
“Our wedding planner fucked up. They… I don’t know, they did something illegal and know, we don’t have a fucking wedding planner and we can’t get our money back and Harrison is mad and I’m mad. He’s out with his boys and I couldn’t just be at home and, aaaah”, she buried her face in a white pillow, leaving makeup stains on it, but you didn’t care. “And now, we don’t know what to do. We wanted to marry in a month, (YN)”, she cried out. Heavy sobs interrupted her speech.
“shit, that sucks”, you blew out, patting her back to sooth her. “Can’t you just sue them? I mean, it’s hard, right before your wedding, but still. Maybe you could get a piece of your money back?”, you suggested, biting your lower lip. Was that the right thing to say in such a situation? Should you just offer her a drink? Right, that would be great. “Drink?”
(ybf) only nodded, smearing the makeup stains deeper into your cushion, but you still didn’t care.
You walked in to your kitchen, grabbing two glasses from a cupboard and filling them with red wine. Then, you filled another bowl with other snacks, you would need them tonight. And a lot of movies. And a lot of tissues. And a lot of nerves, if she continues to sob into your favorite pillow.
After two movies, and almost 4 hours, an idea popped up in your head. You didn’t know if it was a great one, but you could give it a shoot. As you searched for your phone in the middle of empty skittles packages and unopened chips-bags, your best friend looked at you. “You now”, she slurred, tipsy from all the alcoholic liquor you both drank “I love you”, giggles escaped her lips, as she pushed her index finger against your chest.
“I love you, too. And because of that, I’ll save your wedding”, you gave her a bright and confident smile. One, that no one could imitate. “I just have to ask Haz for something”. You reached for your phone, which laid between two bags and opened the message box with Haz. A few older messages popped up, the last one was a birthday-gratulation to him and a ‘thank you’ message from him.
“Haz, give me the number of your best man. I need to text him”
You wrote, putting down your phone, because you thought he would need a few minutes to even witness, that he had a text. But that wasn’t the case.
Harrison Osterfield send a contact Thomas stupidly Holland
You laughed at the name, but still saved his number. Should you write him right now, or should you wait until tomorrow? You decided to text him now, you didn’t want to waste a minute, so you typed in:
“Hello, Thomas. I’m (YN) (LN), bridesmaid of your (probably) best friend’s bride. I want to tell you an idea, that just popped into my mind, can we talk?”
Again, you put down your phone, looking at (Ybf) who fell asleep during the third movie with Tobey Maguire in the leading role. The watch on the wall told you, that it was already 2am. So, you didn’t had high hopes for an answer, but again, you were wrong.
“Yeah, of course. I’ll call you tomorrow”
You didn’t reply, but you put down your phone and eventually fell asleep, too.
Thirty days left, Saturday the 4th
The ringing noise of your phone and the annoyed grumbling of (ybf) woke you up. A quick gaze on the screen told you, that Thomas called, as he promised last night.
“Oh fuck” You jumped up, grabbed your phone and walked to your tiny balcony, where you sat down on one of the two chairs out there.
“Hello?”, his voice was as cracked as yours, maybe even worse.
“Yeah, hello Thomas, here’s (YN). Thanks for calling. Uhm, I think I’ll just go straight to the point and assume Haz already told you about the wedding planner?” You placed your feet on the other chair, crossing your free hand over your chest.
“He did last night. What’s your plan?” he didn’t hide his British accent, but his voice became clearer.
“Well, what about we plan it? Like… We could meet up and plan a whole wedding for them, so they can marry in thirty days”
He didn’t answer at first, all you could hear was his breathing and your own heartbeat.
“Okay, I’m in. Where should we meet?”
You let out the breath that you didn’t even know you were holding, which let him chuckle a bit.
“You know that cute, little Coffeeshop near their house? It’s called the green place, meet me there at 2 pm, I have to get (ybf) home, anyway”
“Okay, see ya then”
---
The coffeeshop was crowded and almost every table was already taken. You sighed in annoyance, rolling your head to get loose of a bit of the tension that built up there. You tapped your index finger on the table you got, waiting for a brown-haired man to burst through the door, apologizing for his delay of twenty minutes.
After five more minutes, you searched for his name in your contacts and called him. Coincidentally, right behind you started a phone to ring, and it ended right then, when Thomas picked up and answered. You could hear the same background sounds by him, as they were by you.
“Please say, that you aren’t right behind me?” You heard shuffling noises, a few footsteps and a coffee cup, which was placed in front of you.
“I’m not behind you, I’m next to you”, he laughed, hanging up and sat down on the empty chair on your right.
“Well, yeah, eh…”, his brown eyes drowned you in a sea of chocolate, where you would be glad to die. “We… I, god, that’s harder then I thought”, you mumbled into your palm, as you thought about your next words. “We have thirty days left and not even the slightest idea of what they even want for their wedding, right? Right. So, I thought about a basic thing. You know? White and red roses, super uncomfortable white chairs, a white carpet, we need a cheap band who’re able to play the wedding march, and we need a garden, do you have a house with a huge one? We’re gonna use it. And-“, tom cut you off, placing his Hand over yours, because you almost hit a nearby customer with them.
“Calm down, darling”, he laughed, revealing his quiet pretty teeth. As you said, we have thirty days left, we don’t have to plan everything right now”, he calmed you down.
“Okay, but we should start with the cake. I think they already sent out the invitations and I’m sure they already have the answers from them. I’ll ask (ybf)”, you said, as you texted named one.
“Okay, I know a pretty good cake manufacture not far away from here. They can deliver it to my house, and yes, I have a rather big garden”, he laughed again, his eyes closing during that.
“Okay, thank you. Let’s go to the cake maker!”
Twenty-five days left, Thursday the 9th
“You already have a dress, right? Please say, that you already own one, (ybf)!”, you begged over your phone, closing your eyes as you heard the worst answer ever.
“No, unfortunately not”
“Okay, I’ll come over, we have to go shopping”, you sighed, ending the call to pack your bag with all your needed things.
~
“Welcome to Wendy’s wedding wishes, what can I do for you?”, the blonde seller intertwined
her hands in front of her stomach and smiled at you and your best friend.
“She needs a wedding dress and shoes and whatever else”
“Okay, lovely bride. What kind of dress do you want?”
You stepped back from their lovely world, fishing your phone out of your purse, because it just buzzed.
Thomas: “Do you think we need another decoration, too? I mean, not only flowers, but maybe balloons or stuff?”
You raised your eyebrows and breathed, before you texted back.
You: “Yeah, we could need them. Take one pack of some see-through and one pack of colored one”
You followed the two women through this huge dress store, carefully to not step on one of these expensive things.
Thomas: “Okay, something else? Can I call you?”
You tugged your lower lip in, biting on it and looked around.
You: “I’m looking for a dress with (ybf) so unfortunately not, sorry. What do you need?”
You hit send, catching up with your friend and the saleswoman.
Thomas: “Nothing, to be honest. I just wanted to hear your voice again. Haha”
This text sent a huge heat wave to your face. What? Why would you just hear my voice, weirdo? you laughed in your mind, before you typed again.
You: “We have to meet up again, anyway. Maybe tomorrow? Or Saturday at the coffeeshop again?”
Thomas: “Saturday at 10 am at the coffeeshop. I’ll be that one with the brown hair ;D”
You just shook your head, with a smile plastered on your face.
Twenty-three days left, Saturday the 11th
“So, you spoiled him the whole freaking movie?”, you laughed at his statement, sipping on your already cold coffee.
“Yeah, kinda. I was just too excited, I guess” His smile grew bigger by the sound of your laugh and his heart warmed up, as he noticed, that tini tiny wrinkles showed up by the corner of your beautiful eyes.
“You’re the worst, Thomas”
“Tom. You… You can call me just Tom”, he looked to the table, almost a little bit shy.
“Okay, just Tom, you said we could use your garden, right? Can we place s couple of chairs there? (ybf) told me, that there will be almost fifty guests” You bite your lower lip, as you told him the information you just got yesterday from the bride herself.
Tom took his spoon to play with the foam on his late. “Yeah, of course. I just have to cut down a tree, move the fence and fill the pool with cement”, he giggled. “No, don’t worry. It will be alright, and everything will turn out great. And if somethings fail, just think about the fact, that we only had a month to prepare all of that”, he calmed you down, placing one of his big, warm hands on your lower arm. His thumb moved, tracing little cycles on your skin.
“Okay. Thank you again, Tom”
Nineteen days left, Wednesday the 15th
“You know, we need a catering-service, too”, you scrolled through your phone, searching for a certain phone number, as you laid on his couch in his living room.
“What do you have in mind?” Tom stood in the kitchen, one room further, and prepared two drinks one for you and one for him.
“Don’t know, but we should order some veggie things, too” Your hand reached for the cup, which he handed you. “Thanks, darling”, you gave him a smile.
“Or we could just order Pizza”, he shrugged his shoulders, taking a sip from his cup.
“Pizza? We can’t just order Pizza to a freaking wedding, Tom”, you laughed again, blessing him with the most beautiful view he ever had since a few years.
“Why not? I would definitely order Pizza to mine”, he raised his chin, looking at you from the corner of his eye, through his eyelashes.
“Oh, you too?”
Ten days left, Friday the 24th
“We could do five rows with five chairs on each side”, you suggested, drawing the lines on an empty sheet of white paper to show him, what you mean, calculating the tree and his pool in your plan.
“Okay, so I just have to cover a small area of my pool. That’s okay, nothing big”, Tom held his hands up, biting on his own lower lip. “But it’s not my fault, if someone stumbles and falls into the water”, he laughed. That’s the moment where you realized, that he could make a joke to everything and every single situation, and you liked that. You started to like that young man with his disgusting cute smile, his horrible beautiful doe-eyes and his unflattering, kinky humor.
You liked him, tho.
“Okay, uhm…”, you walked around in his kitchen, not wanting to stand near him, because you feared he could sense the heat in your face with his nasty, muscular arms. “We could place the eating station here”, you drew a rather big cycle with your hand into the air, near his kitchen counter, “and well, we would have to move your couch and stuff for the other things” you informed him, without looking in his face.
“Yeah… did you make a cross by plus one?”, Tom leaned against the couch, crossing his arms and looking at you, while you gazed down on the floor.
“No, I always went with (ybf) to such events, but well, it’s her wedding, right?”, you shrugged and shook your head. “And you?” Finally looking up, you could see his eyes lighting up like little fireworks, while he shook his head, too, to signalizing his answer.
You were testing the waters with your toe, before jumping right in the deep sea of love
Four days left, Thursday the 30th
“We did order the cake, right?”, you asked for the hundredths time today, and Tom still gave you the same answer, which was a clear “Yes, love”.
You were stressed, and so he decided to take you to a small, calming house in the forest, near the city you and your best friend lived.
“You have to calm down a bit. Everything’s alright and you planned everything through, so just relax for today” He drove the car, fast but steady, as if it runs in his blood to drive an expensive car a curvy road up. As if he wouldn’t care about the wedding of your both best friends, that was held in only four freaking fucking days.
But he was right. You had to calm down a bit, you shouldn’t let the task consume you that much, it was a favor, after all.
“Okay, just tell me where we’re heading, because I don’t want to die, yet” you gave him a side eye with a smirk, as he switched the gear.
“We’re heading to an adorable little spa, where I’ll let you relax, and we’re only leaving, when you had AT LEAST two massages” His own grin never left his lips, while he told you his plan and holding a hand up, to support his statement.
“Why do you torture me like this?
“Because, if you’re honest, you like it”. He winked, biting on his tongue.
Did he… He didn’t right? Was that a flirt?
“Oh, and how would you know?”
“I can see it in your eyes, darling. And, besides, everyone wants to relax sometimes”
You took a deep breath. You were right. He didn’t.
One day left, Sunday, September the 2nd
“The cake will be delivered tomorrow, before 8am. The catering will arrive at around 11am and the guests will come at 12 and…” you stopped to speak, as you looked on Thomas’ face. He sat before you, his forehead in folds and his thumb between his lips, biting on it slightly. “What’s wrong, Tommy?”
“I’m just amazed about the fact, that you organized all of that in just a month. Other people plan and plan and plan for a couple of months, even years, maybe. But you… Gosh, that’s somehow a talent”, his eyes starred into yours, catching every movement of you and burning the picture of your pretty face in his mind, so he would never forget you, because he doesn’t want to.
You bite the inside of your cheek, looking away and feeling like a teenage girl, all of a sudden. Just because this handsome somewhat complimented you. Just because he acknowledged your hard work, that you put into this wedding. Just because you were sure, he was honest, because he hadn’t a reason to lie to you.
“Thank you, Thomas. But I must say, I had a pretty good assistant” Your lips pulled upwards to a smile, which was mirrored by him.
“So, ehm…”, he stood up, took a few steps in your direction and remind right before your feet, always looking into your face, locking your wide eyes with his. “Before anyone else could ask, do you want to be my ‘plus one’ for this wedding and the next thousands of fancy events?”, his eyes filled up with fear and hope at the same time. Would you turn him up? Didn’t you get all the hints he sent you during this whole month?
You smiled. An honest smile. And honest smile, which reassured him, calmed him down and raised his hopes even higher. “I would love to be your ‘plus one’, Thomas”.
Zero days left, Weddingday, September the 3rd
Your best friend darted around in the dressing room, upstairs in Tom’s house. Her legs bumped against the insides of her dress, making almost annoying noises. She was nervous, of course, nervous and so grateful to call you her best friend.
“I would marry you, if Haz didn’t already asked me”, she laughed, trying to relax a bit, so you had to do something.
“Hey, hey, hey”, you whispered, grabbing her shoulders and holding her still. “We, Tom and I, planned this day in thirty-one days, because we both love you and Haz and you love each other. We can’t have a Love-square, that would be… really strange”, you frowned by the thought about sharing Tom with someone other or letting Haz or your best friend touch you in ways, no one wants to know.
“You know, I never thought about it, that you would pair up with Thomas”, she said, while she smoothed invisible wrinkles out of her beautiful, white dress. “It was always Haz’ group and my group, you know?”, she laughed a bit, blinking away a few tears of joy and happiness. “I thank you so much, (YN). Really”
---
You walked downstairs, helping (ybf) to not stumble on her dress. After the both of you arrived, you exited the house through the front door, walked around and reminded at the flower decorated fence door.
“Ready?”, you clapped the veil over her face, rubbing her shoulders and gave her a bright smile.
“No…”, she whined.
“You can do that. Remember the hot dog contest? If you could do THAT, you’re able to marry Harrison, my little bird”
You took a small bouquet, straightened your back and took a last breath, before you walked through the door into the garden.
The small band began to play the wedding march, the guest stood up and waited for you and the bride, which followed your steps. Smiling, as if there were no morning. Your feet lead you through a little way between the chair-rows, to a small bow, where Haz and Tom were already waiting. Stepping to the left, your eyes found Tom’s, and you both couldn’t fight back a loving smile.
---
Of course, after the ceremony followed the dance with the bride, where you took the chance to dance with Harrison, your now somehow brother-in-law by feelings, and reminded him, that he should take care of (ybf), or else you would become his worst nightmare, but he just laughed and said, that his now wife could not have a better best friend, than you.
“May I?” Tom’s finger tapped on Haz’s shoulder, asking for permission to dance with you.
“She’s all yours, man”
You laughed, twirled around in Tom’s arms and danced close, completely ignoring your surroundings.
“Would it be too early to say it?”, his whispered question caught you slightly off-guard, so you tilted your head.
“To say what?”
“I need you”
It all started with three words and a text, and it all ends with three words and a kiss.
“I love you”
