I am thrilled beyond words at this recognition of Bishop Baraga's heroic virtue by the universal Church. I cannot overstate what a significant step this is towards the anticipated beatification and canonization of Bishop Baraga. This is a day for which we have been waiting nearly 40 years. I am so pleased to be able to call my saintly predecessor ‘Venerable’ Frederic Baraga!

I was taught the faith in Catholic schools using materials that were weak and insubstantial. I wasn’t being taught my faith. The liturgy suffered from experimentation as well. When I speak about this publicly, invariably people of my generation come up to me to agree with what I’m saying. This includes many bishops. My generation raised up the next generation. Since we weren’t taught the faith, we raised children who weren’t either. We need a renewal in catechesis.

For the congregation to answer the priest, “And with your spirit,” is actually a theological statement about what we Catholics believe regarding ordained ministers. Through Holy Orders, Christ has forever configured the priest’s soul to Himself in a special way, by the power of the Holy Spirit. By specifically referencing the priest’s spirit, we can affirm this transformation and pray for his ministry.
