Haha I have been thinking A Lot about why I wasn’t into MCR even tho I don’t dislike them at all/they seem cool but I think it’s just a (for me, v white and suburban) subculture division that maybe had more to do with my peers than anything (I was in forensics and scholars’ bowl so I hear ya, hehe)

what they do

Managed to mention J. Marion Sims and that “he experimented on female slaves” and somehow forget to mention that he like did it without anesthesia because the belief was that black people didn’t feel pain. Consequently, this has had lasting effects on medical practice in relation to black people (i.e. black people tend to get pain meds prescribed less often even when they’re needed). But, not wanting memorials to these guys is whitewashing history.

There are other gems mentioned but honestly this is one of the most tone deaf pieces in science I’ve come across and that along with the fact that the article is unsigned, is immensely discouraging especially as a black scientist in training.
