...or so I thought. FYI, at this point, she was my height -- just over 5' tall -- including her stem at the top.
When I got her into the car on the 25th -- which is when I originally took her to work, thinking she was due that day -- she basically fell apart at the legs. She couldn't withstand being placed horizontally and into the back of the car. Her clay feet broke off, and her head got tilted forward.
With help from a security guard at work, I got her out of the car, back onto my four wheel dolly and wheeled her inside and into the 1st (ground) floor break room. Someone from a section of sample check-in helped hold her in place while I tried to fix her wire supports, which had bent getting her into the car, and reattach her feet. I kept working on her as much as I could then wheeled her to the elevator and into the break room of my floor. We got an extension until the end of Friday, so I kept working on her whenever I could.
I thought I'd made her extra supports strong enough, but by Thursday, she was falling over, held up only by the handle of the dolly/cart. Friday morning I had to make the decision to:
Throw away her legs and feet,
Set her down over the original bolts in the base to cover them,
Hot glue her to the base,
Remove her head, add supports, and reattach it,
And arrange her dress to look nice again.
Then I put her back on the dolly/cart and took her back down the elevator to where we needed to display our entries.
Only one other person entered the contest -- Becky T.
Voting took place the following Monday, the 30th.
I did win the vote, but the announcement email said the contest was very close, which I wasn't expecting. I knew some people would vote for the cute, simple "Boo!" display, but I didn't think it would be nearly half the voters. Many people were out that day, and a lot of people there just choose not to vote on our contests, so I will just take the win and be content... enough.
Since we hadn't had a pumpkin contest since 2019, I was hoping for a lot of entries. With only two entries this year, we might not get a pumpkin contest next year. 😢
I hope we do, though, because I've already got an idea for it.... 🦋 🍄
