My thoughts over Daemon Targaryen, part 1

Hello everybody! I’m back, and this time is go discuss my favourite character from HOTD, and the shit they have been doing with him on season 2.

As always, spoilers under the cut!

Well, for starters, when I watched season 2, I haven’t read Fire and Blood yet, and I’m still not done with the book, but let’s talk about the differences I’ve noticed up to now.

Reading the book and comparing it to season 1, something became clear as the day for me. Our not-so-beloved showrunner Ryan Condal hates Daemon. All the changes they’ve done on his character on season 1 leaded me tho that conclusion. All the things that made him a gray character were cutted off, and he was left pretty much as a walking red flag.

Let’s begin with his first wife, the one that in the show he killed with a rock. In the book, Daemon isn’t even a suspect, because if I recall well, he was fighting at Stepstones, or something similar.

Trying to sleep with young Rhaenyra though, that rumor actually is in the book, but again, he’s considered a “gray” character for a reason.

Now, the point I truly wished to get to in this first part. How Daemon/Rhaenyra/Laena thing was adapted.

For what we read in the books, the three of them always have been super close. Daemon and Nyra didn’t spend a decade apart, because Daemon and Laena weren’t on Essos, but in Driftmark, that is super close to Dragonstone by dragonfly. Now, about Laena’s unfortunate death. Not only Rhaenyra was there the whole time with her, but she didn’t marry Daemon in the next day, but something about six months later.

So, instead of two people who haven’t seen each other in ten years and married in the following day of the guy’s wife death, now we have two very close people who supported each other through the grief of losing a lost one, and who most likely already had an affair before (I don’t mean that Daemon was cheating on Laena with Rhaenyra, probably it was some kind of threesome thing). See the difference that those small details do in the bigger picture?

I hope we get to see more of Baela and Rhaena in the next season because they’re literally ignored and just side pieces in s1. Their mother rode the largest dragon and was one hell of a woman while their father is well daemon and he’s unhinged asf. These girls definitely deserve to be more than just background characters and with the parents they’ve got, they’re definitely gonna be complex characters. They deserve to be more than just the brides of the strong boys or the daughters of Daemon. They deserve to be more than just an extension of the men in their lives. They saw their mother kill herself, saw her and their unborn sibling burn. That’s a lot of trauma and shit to unpack man, my girls are definitely going to be interesting characters.

Ser Joffrey Velaryon was the firstborn son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen with her first husband, Ser Laenor Velaryon. He had dark hair and and the signature Targaryen purple eyes. As he grew, he was said to look more and more like Ser Harwin Strong, the rumoured lover of Princess Rhaenyra and, according to the Greens, the real father of her three children. However, this rumour was questioned by Ser Laenor's obvious adoration for the boy and how he doted on him. No man would treat like that a boy that wasn't his.

As the only boy for a good while, he was severely spoiled and protected by his older sisters, who often stole him from the nurses to play with him.
