When I was a little kid, like 3-5 years old, I used to rub the backs of my arms on my mother’s so I could somehow transfer some of her dark colour onto my very light skin. At a very young age I was fully aware that I looked very different from my mother. I never really started liking my light skin until I got into my senior years of high school. Which coincidentally was the time I started being openly proud of being a blackfulla and not identifying with my whiteness in any way (even though before this I never really identified with my whiteness anyway). Would 21 year old me still have the same sentiments about changing his skin as child me? Probably yes if I’m being honest, but at least I love myself a whole lot more now.
