I just love Ilia so much. 

I love her backstory. Ilia trying to fit in, almost believing she’s not a faunus, then realising that as soon as they find out her friends will see nothing but the faunus in her. That she might be able to forget about it, but the others aren’t. What Blake said earlier on the show makes so much sense keeping in mind her own experiences, Ilia’s story and the countless other stories about faunus discrimination she must have grown up with: “I want people to see me for who I am, not what I am.”

I love that Ilia changes colours depending on the emotions she feels. Blue for sadness, red for anger. I love that she seems to be able to control it, but that strong emotions can make her lose control. 

I love that Ilia and Blake apparently were good friends, so close that even the Albain brothers knew about it. I love that Ilia still seems to value that somehow, just look how she refuses to hurt Blake even though she has no issue with hurting Sun. I love that there is a complex relationship we might find out more about soon. 

I love Ilia.

Blake’s trailer got me thinking ‘bout things

So, we finally get some backstory on Ilia. It was hinted that she and Blake were friends in the past, and now they’re both feeling some things. Obviously Ilia has some issues with Blake, and vice versa, and even Sun’s got bad blood with her now.

But it’s plain to see that underneath that Blake and Ilia are unhappy. Blake doesn’t want her old friend staying on the path she is.

I really do think that the focus on Ilia means that she’s going to leave the White Fang eventually. There’s a parallel with Ilia having hurt Sun, and Adam having hurt Blake; Faunus hurting Faunus. Where do the humans come into that fight?

Blake’s human friends - Ruby Rose, Weiss freakin’ Schnee, Yang Xiao Long (and everyone else, of course). Ilia, meet the girl that wants to save everyone, the former heiress that learned to not discriminate, and Blake’s partner that risked her life to protect her from Adam.

It’ll probably also serve to help Blake realise that she’s stronger with her team than apart from them. Seriously, how great would it be to see her want to help Ilia escape, and convince her that there are good people out there that will be there for her regardless of what she’s done?

I am wondering how important Ilia will be to Blake’s development. Everyone basically freaked out when she was introduced. A lot of people thought that there was something more than friends going on with those two - one-sided or not…I hope we find out.

I also did some thinking on the Blake and Sun partnership, because it’s right there.

All the times we’ve seen Blake and Sun work together in combat… JUST MAKES ME WANT TO SEE HER BACK WITH HER PARTNER, YANG, BECAUSE THAT WAS TEAMWORK THAT MADE THE DREAM WORK!

Plus, poor Neptune, I bet he misses his best buddy!

Going back over V4, Sun has overstepped his boundaries one too many times in my eyes. Now, I know what you’re thinking, but no, Sun’s great, he’s capable, I trust him fine with her. I mean that he literally stepped on her…

While I put the gifs in for humour, I’m partially serious about it.

I’ve always seen Sun as very caring and considerate, but you can be considerate while being oblivious. He so badly wants to help that he can’t see thing’s from Blake’s perspective. Sometimes, yeah, he’s done a good job of pointing out the things she’s doing wrong. That, I am thankful for.

I think that he’s unaware of what really happened to Yang, and that’s why he just doesn’t get why Blake ran away. That’s my problem with him, he’s been a big wrench in the ‘get Blake to talk about Yang’ machine. There’s no denying that Blake’s got serious issues about that. I could have slapped him myself (I’m joking) when he barged in on Blake and Ghira talking.

But there’s more. I do not find their dynamic cohesive nor do I find it compelling - it’s missing something. This has nothing to do with romance, either. Whether or not you ship one thing or another isn’t what I’m trying to get at. Disregarding my feelings towards ships, and just focusing on their friendship…it’s strained, and most of the time it makes me feel uncomfortable; watching Sun trying to help, and Blake feeling misunderstood, and then Sun not understanding in turn what he’s doing wrong.

It seems they’re doing this on purpose to the viewers. This is where he’s being the wrench again. Having Blake team up with a different outgoing blonde just makes me realise that it’s easier for her to not face what Yang might have become because of Adam. It’s easier to deal with Sun, as difficult as it may be at times. Either person presents difficulties to her, but one is a far cry more scary than the other. I know that it’s also a good thing that he’s there, don’t get me wrong, and I know that in some way, this is the way it’s gotta be. You have to have Sun there by her side for a lot of reasons, and the underlying one is that it allows Blake to get distracted from Yang.

And that’s really emotionally hard-hitting. I’ve been there. It’s so much easier to push someone away than face any feelings and emotions you might have. And so, she let Sun in, because he was still the less daunting friend to turn to.

There are so many reasons for Blake to stay away from Yang and Ruby and Weiss, but she doesn’t actually want to, deep down. She loves them, but her love is what prevents her from risking return. Yang especially is at risk of being hurt by Adam. Ruby has silver eyes, and Salem wants her gone, and Adam is on Salem’s side. Then, Weiss is just someone that Adam despises. They’re all at risk.

But Blake’s going to have to make a choice, sooner or later, whether or not she’ll let Adam control her life anymore.

Side note, I just miss Blake and Yang’s friend/partnership at this point. Hell, team RWBY’s friendship and comradery, too.

This is the shot I was talking about -- it’s sort of an oxymoron, but there’s such a improvement in the visuals in subtle areas. There’s less bloom, everything is a lot more crisp and the highlights and shadows are clearer among other things. It’s even more defined than Volume 3 was.

I wasn’t a fan of the change to Maya to begin with (even though it was necessary for production), but I’m starting to go from settling for it to being glad it happened.

My take from the Blake 2017 trailer:

It worked. Just like Weiss’ trailer we got a view of her “starting” point. Where with Weiss we saw where she got her prowess and beliefs, here we saw Blake getting her convictions and beliefs. Also the idea to hide among humans. But more than that, what both trailers showcased was the difference between their past and present. Weiss was clear; she’s not only a far stronger fighter, and more refined while giving up the dance-like useless techniques, but she’s also acting independently without her sister. Blake, on the other hand, is now not only living openly as a faunus, (albeit in Menagerie,) she’s doing it with the belief that the White Fang’s current path, “breaking their teeth,” isn’t the way to enact change. It’s also shown in who she’s beside as a partner. Before, it was Ilia. Now? Sun. The trailer gave nods to Blacksun but I don’t mind Sun being relatively un-involved in this because it’s about Blake. It’s about her starting point being established, and linking back to the here and now. Ilia is her starting point. Sun is where she is now.

First off…

YASSSS GIRL!

Second thing, I think this is more than just a trailer for Blake, it’s a trailer for Ilia too. The fact we were given more background about her than Blake is something that’s going to be important later. Especially the part about the human girls snickering about faunus dying.

Why?

Because we are getting to the point where the current WF acts like those shitty girls. And Ilia is clearly doubting/unsure her need to fight Blake.

Maybe she’s even doubting the cause at the moment since her friend Blake is completely against the current WF.

I can’t wait for this next volume, but I get he feeling Ilia is going to play a major role in Blake’s story. And potentially the whole WF plot.
