You’re sprawled out on the couch, with the comforting weight and warmth of Keigo’s body anchoring you further into the cushions. Drained from a long week of work, you two flip through the channels on the TV hoping to find something that mildly piques your interests. Mindlessly jabbing at the remote and skipping through the bursts of laugh tracks and commercials, you pause when you see a zookeeper holding a tiger cub.

You look down at Keigo for confirmation, “Are you in the mood for animals?”

He nods and buries himself further into your chest, a wordless invitation for you to lace your fingers into his hair. Indulging him, you comb through his silky strands and lightly massage at his scalp the way he likes. You two watch the zoo documentary in silence, occasionally cooing at the progress of the rehabilitated cub and his mother. Absentmindedly playing with the waistband of your shorts, Keigo mumbles, “I’ve always wanted to go to one of these places.”

You softly gasp, “A zoo? There’s a really nice one here that I've gone to a few times, I'll take you!”

"You're always taking my life experience virginity," he laughs meekly.

A bit more awake now, you tell him about the different animals they have at the zoo.

"We can even feed the piglets!" you beam.

As you excitedly insist on making a full day out of it like a grade-school field trip, Keigo immediately gets shy about it, always feeling vulnerable when he reveals yet another small pleasure he’s missed out on in his life. With the slight abundance of free time that he has now that he is Hawks: The HPSC President and not Hawks: The Wing Hero, you two occasionally go on spontaneous dates as you discover more of these little things he hasn’t done. Last month it was an amusement park (which he was not at all impressed by the speeds or heights of the roller-coasters), and next weekend it's going to be the zoo.

Spotting a large netted outdoor area, you pull Keigo's arm across the pebbled trail, "Look, babe! An aviary! This is new, it wasn't here the last time!"

Keigo laughs at your excitement, his naturally lined eyes crinkling at the sheer joy in your voice. You let him drag you to the places he was most excited about first, and now it was his turn to indulge you.

You fawn over the tufted parrot in front of you when it looks in your direction, “Oh, it's looking at me! Hi, cutie pie!”

You feel Keigo’s grip on your hand tighten almost painfully. You whip around to look at him, “Ow! What happened?”

“Sorry, a bug flew too close to my ear,” he says monotonically, making you furrow your brows at him in questioning.

Being the trained spy he is, he laughs it off to ease your suspicion, “There are bees everywhere out here, baby. You know how I feel about bees.”

You brush it off and let go of his hand, leading the way to the next section of birds.

You quietly observe them as they fly around and peck at their food. Coming across a particular one, you giggle, "Hawks look, its a hawk!"

Completely enraptured by the pretty bird, you miss the way his body slightly stiffens.

Complimenting it as if the little guy could understand you, you say, “Oh you’re just too gorgeous! Keigo, look at the pattern on it's wings! Awww I want to pet-”

Faster than you can blink, he’s in your space. He loops an arm tightly around your waist and pulls you into himself, your back flush against his toned front.

Startled by the movement you ask, “Whoa– are you feeling okay?”

“I'm fine,” he says shortly.

You look over your shoulder to stare at him in confusion. His golden eyes are shooting lasers at the bird, his pupils dilating and expanding repeatedly. The hawk responds instantly, puffing its feathers and squawking at him incessantly at the unspoken threat. He’s standing like a brick wall behind you, his grip fierce on your waist. You frown in confusion, looking between the hawk and your Hawks, then around to the other people who have started to stare. Using all your strength, you start walking backwards, pushing Keigo further away from the distressed bird, hoping that some distance would calm them both down.

You’ve experienced this strange possessive side of Keigo only once before, when he interrupted a man flirting with you at a park while he was passing by on hero duty. You imagine today, if he still had his wings like he did then, his feathers would be sharpened into blades— Oh fuck, his wings. The realization hits you like a truck. Since Keigo lost his wings during the war, it's been one of those touchy things you two don’t really talk about. He pretends he’s fine, you pretend to believe him, and you ignore the way he'd shimmy through smaller spaces in attempts to make room for wings that were no longer there. You mentally scold yourself at your mindless slip up.

Quickly turning around to face him, you cradle his face in your palms, “Oh, honey. I’m so so sorry, I wasn’t thinking.”

You notice his breathing is ragged and his eyes look panicked. Linking your arm with his, you guide him to the exit and a nearby secluded bench. After sitting for a minute or so, he seems to have calmed down.

"Hey," you softly say, "Talk to me, what are you feeling right now?"

He looks away from you shamefully, avoiding eye contact, "I'm okay," he says roughly.

"No, Keigo, you're not. I'm truly sorry. My comments were inconsiderate and-"

"Can we talk about this at home, babe, please? Not right now," he pleads, finally looking into your eyes.

You can see the anguish collecting between his brows, and you lift your hand to smooth the wrinkle there with your thumb.

"Okay, lets go home."

The drive home was quiet, but not uncomfortable. The smooth beats of the radio and hum of the engine dissipated any remaining tension in Keigo's shoulders and in your mind.

Finally changed into pajamas, you intend to give Keigo space and lounge in the living room. As you gather your things to leave the bedroom, Keigo calls out your name. Turning to face him, you notice he's seated at the top of the bed, leaning against the headboard and pulling the sheets on your side of the bed back in invitation. You smile lightly, and make your way over to him.

After letting you cozy up next to him, he wraps his arm around you and begins, "I want to explain and apologize for earlier."

A small smile graces his lips, but his voice is quiet, embarrassed almost. Your stomach drops with guilt, fighting the urge to say he has nothing to apologize for. You nod for him continue.

"This is so stupid to explain, but you've seen some of my birdish traits before…" he trails off.

"Not stupid, don't talk like that. But yes, I have," you say.

He clears his throat and continues, "I've never had that happen before but I guess some inner avian instinct felt threatened… or felt that there was some competition because I don't have wings anymore. Even though my quirk is technically gone, it still happens. It's such an out of body experience, it's a bit embarrassing for me to talk about…"

You softly smile in reassurance and he returns it, "There's no need to feel embarrassed, but I understand. I still want to apologize though", you say as your fingers lightly trail his back.

Beneath your fingertips you feel the raised scar tissue left over from his burns from about two years ago now. For you, the surface is familiar, but for him its still something to be ashamed of.

You continue, "My words were careless and I'm sorry. I know your wings are a sensitive subject, and competitive instinct or not, I am the one who made you feel threatened and I never want to do that again. I want you to feel safe with me Keigo, safe enough to talk about the things that are bothering you."

He looks at you with such sincerity, like he believes you could do no wrong. His golden eyes twinkle at your affirmation.

"Besides, you know you're the only birdie for me, even if you are a little possessive," you giggle as you brush his fluffy eyebrow down with your thumb, "No one could ever compare, trust me."

He makes a little sound at that, making you melt even more for your pretty, petty lover.

a/n: i went to the zoo, saw pretty birds, and thought of hawks absolutely hating the fact that i was fawning over other birds, and so i made this. i love selfshipping! (also pls only support “ethical” zoos that prioritize conservation and actually care for the animals, i also have no clue how aviaries work and im pretty sure hawks shouldnt even be in spaces like that, but pls suspend your disbelief i am not a zoologist)

A Wish for the New Year

Izuku tells Katsuki how grateful he is for their relationship, to the point that even if they broke up, Izuku would be happy they had these past few years together at the very least. Katsuki, however, is not pleased by Izuku's choice of words and shuts that insecure attitude down immediately with a few choice words of his own.

The streets are silent at this time of night, the sky dark and uneven between the flurry of snowflakes rushing through in the air. The soft, golden glow of the streetlamps and twinkling fairy lights on trees and storefronts guide them through the night. It almost looks like the stars have fallen out of the sky and onto the Earth, like they're glimmering and shining just for the Izuku and Katsuki. It's beautiful, and the thought makes Izuku smile to himself. 

He breathes out—slow, steady, warm—and a white mist forms in front of him, spreading out and disappearing like a puff of smoke. It's past midnight now, and Izuku was heading home from the New Year's party with Katsuki. They walk side-by-side together, hands just barely brushing against each other with every step. Izuku glances at Katsuki, and finds Katsuki already staring right at him.

"Your face is so red," Izuku says, noticing the pink flush across Katsuki's cheeks and the tips of his ears. "Are you cold, Kacchan?"

Katsuki lifts his scarf up to cover his face. "No."

Izuku reaches out, linking his pinky finger with Katsuki's. "Here, you can hold my hand to warm you up."

"Hah?" Katsuki exclaims, all bark and no bite. "I'm not cold! Don't do something so unnecessary!"

They've both grown so much, but moments like these remind Izuku that his Kacchan will never stop being adorable.

"Come to think of it..." Izuku says, leaning in close to Katsuki. Their shoulders brush, and Katsuki lowers his hand, watching him with the usual mixture of anger and curiosity. "It's been three years since we've been together. I never thought I would selfishly be able to keep you as my own, yet here we are. You accepted my confession and lived with me."

Izuku closes his eyes, smiling softly. His nose brushes against Katsuki's, bringing his lips closer and closer to meet Katsuki's own. "I'm really too blessed. Even if one day you don't want me anymore, these past three years are enough to comfort me—Gah!"

Katsuki suddenly grabs Izuku's face, shoving him away. He squishes Izuku's freckled face tightly as he growls out, "This idiot."

Izuku squirms. "Ehhhh? Why?"

"Cuz you just said something really stupid!" Katsuki snaps. "Even if you're just spouting drunk nonsense, I'll still kill you!"

"Huh—?"

"You keep following me around no matter how hard I try to push you away," Katsuki interrupts. "You barged your nerdy ass into my life, then forced me to accept this shitty bond of ours. It's been that way ever since we were kids."

Time and time again, they've been drawn to each other. When one pulls away, the other is dragged along behind them—a constant, magnetic tug of war between the two of them. It's been that way when they were kids, it's still that way now in their daily lives and their careers as partners and pro heroes, and it's going to stay that way until the day they die.

"Lose interest? Break up?" Katsuki scoffs, then shouts. "In your dreams, nerd! If you start something, then finish it until the end, jackass!"

Katsuki's voice is firm and final. There's snowflakes dusted across his spiky blonde hair and wool jacket, and his face is still flushed red. From the cold or this conversation, Izuku couldn't tell. Even though they're dating, Izuku wonders to himself about whether or not he's a hindrance to Katsuki. But looking at him now, into those bright, burning red eyes, it's as if the cracks in Izuku's heart have been seared shut, his insecurities melting away to make room for their future together. And inside his chest, his newly forged heart sings a sweet melody, a thought that repeats itself over and over again in Izuku's mind and soul.

Kacchan, I want to be with you next year, and the next year after that, forever.

He wants to say it aloud, wants to shout it from the rooftops and whisper it gently into Katsuki's ear. But tears prick at the corners of his eyes, and he finds himself choking up. So, instead, Izuku smiles, swallowing down the sobs and grasping Katsuki's warm hand in his own. And softly, he speaks his wish for the new year aloud.

"Please keep taking care of me this year too, Kacchan."

Katsuki huffs, rolling his eyes. "As if I wasn't planning on doing that already."

They walk shoulder-to-shoulder, side-by-side, into the new year, with both of them looking forward to spending it together as they should.

I wrote 25 fics this years and if I can, it might be 27!

Technically, 27 fics already if counting fics I started in 2024 and updated this year.

How many words did you write this year?

Nearly 114,000 words and counting!

Did you try anything new this year? (New fandom, new pairing, new language, etc.)

Dabbled more into writing more horror and horror adjacent fics.

And, currently, one of the fics I'm working on is a first for the webcomic Bad Thinking Diary.

I also wrote a fic where Miruko and Madam President from MHA interact called A Hero in the Making. I think it was neat to write something for the characters given they share a VA! I also wrote a fic for Yuji and Yuta from JJK called For a Brighter Future for their birth month (March).

Did you participate in any fests/events during the year?

I did! I participated in ItaFushi week here on Tumblr in July! Fun fact, it also happened during my birthday week! The fic is called Strawberry Pink Hair, Jade Green Eyes. I also never thought I would have written one-sided Takako Uro/Naoya Zenin.

Which is the angstiest fic you have written this year?

Aaaah, I feel like this could go to a few fics I have written this year. I'll give it to...

Giving it to my JJK Yorozu/Takako fic Talk Less, Look Pretty.

Which is your most valuable writing lesson learned this year?

I have learned to write what appeals to me. It's something I have been told myself but this year, after writing so many fics that didn't get as much as attention, I came to the realization that I wasn't really writing fics truly for me.

Some fics I was writing were fics I thought would appeal to an audience I felt like I had to please. This year, the more I steered away from writing "fandom appealing" ideas the more happier I felt exploring an idea I felt I truly had more free range on.

Sad as it is, I have accepted some of my fics aren't going to get comments or kudos or even hits no matter how much I wish otherwise. I kind of gave up even holding open sessions for asks about my fics. 😅 I decided to spend more of my time writing the fics I want to than spending time being disappointed. I can't let that get to me. If I do, it will discourage me from writing what I really want and I don't... I refuse to do that to myself.

What do you look forward to writing next year?

Whatever comes to mind really! I do want to try my hand at writing other relationships (platonic and romantic) and more new ideas I have. Other fandoms, even!

I also want to get back into writing more original works! My Shadows of Deckard and Jayce & River stories are in need of some updates.

Also, more of my Kiya's Commentary posts! I have only written two this year (I started in November) and I have so many fics I could talk about.

He was there for all your accomplishments, big or small. He was always so proud of you — from the moment you took your first steps and every minute after. Even when he found out you were Quirkless, his mind never changed.

You were still his pride and joy. His entire world. But to you… it was like your whole world fell apart right in front of you.

Like your father, you always admired heroes. You wanted to be the strongest, the best of the best — and Katsuki saw a glimpse of himself whenever you talked about everything hero-related. It changed when you got a little older, though. Suddenly it was like your passion had completely vanished.

You stopped talking about heroes, and it even led to you ignoring him when you came home from school at the end of each day. Of course, this new behavior wasn’t unseen by the Pro. He’d have to get his eyes checked if he didn’t see it.

At first he assumed it was simple teenage rebellion. You were fourteen, after all. But then he saw how distant you were becoming. You were spending more time in your room, even eating your meals in there.

It’s not like Katsuki could do anything about it most nights. He’d been working a lot of late nights at his agency, so he wasn’t always home to stop you from your antics. And if he was home, sitting silently across the table from you, he couldn’t find the right words to say.

He didn’t know how to reach out to you, mostly because you never gave him anything to work with. Even if you did, he still wouldn’t know what to say. All he knew was that he wanted to help you, but couldn’t.

Days off had become rare for Katsuki, but today he was home free, waiting for you to return from another long day of school.

Relaxed on the couch, he let out a heavy sigh, turning off his phone. He wasn’t getting anything done aimlessly scrolling through news feeds. Except maybe indirectly catching up with old friends.

However, his mind was cleared of all that when he heard the front door unlock, causing him to turn his head expectantly.

He was thinking of getting take out tonight instead of cooking like he usually did, and he wanted his junior’s input on what they should get.

When the door finally opened and you stepped inside, you slipped off your shoes and walked right by him. Katsuki deadpanned at being treated like he was invisible. Much less by his own daughter.

”Hey— get back here, kiddo.” Katsuki said, getting up and stopping you before disappeared down the hallway for the rest of the evening. Placing both hands on either of his hips, he sighed. “It’s my day off and you won’t even say hi to me?”

You only mutter something under your breath, causing Katsuki to roll his eyes. Before he can ask what you were trying to say, he notices one of your backpack straps in ripped, loose threads coming out in every direction.

"What happened to your bag? That's the second one this month. If you're not careful with your crap then I'll start sending you to school without a backpack."

"Fine, whatever! I don't care, just leave me alone!"

The sudden outburst came out louder than you wanted. You didn't mean to raise your voice. You were always careful and quiet, knowing that your father wore hearing aids around the house.

You slap a hand over your mouth as your eyes widen. You're quick to slip past him and run down the hall before slamming the door shut as soon as you enter your room.

You don’t want to talk to your dad about this. It’s none of his business anyway. What happens at school, stays at school. How would you even bring up the fact that you were getting bullied for being Quirkless? It was stupid, and you figured it would pass eventually. That the kids at school would get bored of you and move on.

That was your mindset for the last year.

Just keep your head down and it would all pass by, just like things always did. Either way, you’d still need to have a good excuse for why your backpack was messed up. You knew not just anything flew by your father so easily. After all, he wasn’t the number-one hero for nothing.

With your bag thrown on the ground, you throw yourself onto your bed, just wanting to relax and get your mind off things. You weren’t going to cry. You’re tough, and that means you can’t cry over every little thing that happens. At least… that’s what you were thinking as you felt a tear rolling down your cheek.

With every year that passed, Quirklessness was becoming even more uncommon — and both your parents had Quirks. So why not you? Why did you have to be the odd one out?

You shoved your face into your covers as simple tears became full on sobs. You hated it. Hated the feeling of being so useless, and feeling like you didn’t belong. And maybe you didn’t. Maybe you didn’t deserve to be born with a power. It’s why the universe cursed you to be a powerless nobody who just happened to be the number-one Pro’s daughter.

You couldn’t be a hero. It was impossible for someone like you to be one. And every time the thought crossed your mind, you felt like you were letting down your father. Letting down the person you aspired to be like.

Before you were supposed to gain a Quirk, you remembered how you would talk to your dad about all the amazing things you would do once you had your ability. Your dad was your biggest cheerleader, so it felt like you wasted all that time when you ended up without any special powers.

Your comforter was soaked with your tears, your eyes burning the more you cried. It wasn’t fair. It’s not fair. Nothing is fair.

You didn’t notice your bedroom door opening as you wallowed in your own self-pity. It wasn’t until you felt a dip at the side of your bed that you felt your father’s presence beside you. He didn’t say anything as he cautiously stroked your hair in a comforting manner, untamed and wild just like his own.

You didn’t have it in you to care that he was here, watching you pour out all your pent up feelings of frustration in the form of hot tears, burning your eyes as you hiccuped and swallowed down whatever you were going to say. Because in truth, there was so much you wanted to tell the man beside you.

But you weren’t sure how to. Verbally expressing yourself has never been one of your strong suits. Whenever you felt angry and upset, you distanced yourself until you felt better.

“Did something happen at school?” Katsuki’s voice was uncharacteristically soft when he spoke, bringing his hand down to your back as he rubbed soothing circles to calm you down.

He could clearly see you were hurting. It hurt him to see it. If there was something going on that you weren’t talking about, he wanted to know. But he quickly figured that raising his voice and demanding that you tell him wouldn’t work. He wouldn’t dream of raising his voice at you.

”I… I want to be a hero.” You manage through your choked out sobs. “I want to be strong. Strong like you, but I— I’m not—“ You cut yourself short as you cried harder. You felt so pathetic, not even capable of talking about it. “I don’t know,” Is what comes out.

Katsuki frowns, ignoring the wetness forming in the corner of his eyes. He wasn’t a crier himself, but you were his daughter. His baby girl. A loving, gentle, kind-hearted but hot-tempered girl who wholeheartedly believes she isn’t good enough. And maybe it’s his fault for not trying harder to reach out and showing you that you do matter.

That you were still special — Quirk or none.

“You don’t have to talk to me now, I… I can wait.” the blond says, hand now still on your back. The jacket you have on is his hero merch. It’s nice to see that you still know who the coolest hero is. “But I am still here when you decide to. I know I’m not always home, but I would drop everything if you wanted to talk, alright?”

Lifting your head slightly to wipe your eyes, you swallow your feelings for a moment to speak. You feel like you’ll burst into tears at anything right now, but you try your best to ignore the feeling bubbling up inside you.

“Even though I don’t have a Quirk… do you think I can still be a hero?” you ask, keeping your voice low. You didn’t want to accidentally snap again and get in trouble if you weren’t already.

There’s a painful twist in Katsuki’s chest, he’s seen this before. Though they’d gotten past it long ago, he can’t help but be reminded of Dek— Izuku. Even though he’d been forgiven, he still felt guilty about how he treated him in their adolescence.

Seeing that same sight in his daughter hurt his heart. He held back the tears he knew were in his eyes, and sighed.

”It’s hard to be a hero without a Quirk, sweetheart. But having powers isn’t what makes someone a true hero.” Katsuki says, making you curious, as well as confused. You wondered what he meant by that, and you looked up.

”Huh? What do you mean?”

Katsuki’s words catch in his throat, trying to find the best way to go about this. How should he approach it? Delicate situations were admittedly hard for him to handle. He knows that. But still, he has to at least try.

He’s supposed to be the best, isn’t he? That means he’s also supposed to be the best at being a father. After a long minute, he shifts so he’s more comfortable on the bed.

“Having strength… it doesn’t equal being a good hero. Not all the time.” He starts out, trying not to mess this up. “It’s good to be strong, sure, but being a hero… it’s what’s in your heart that matters. You’re a good person— you like to help people and expect nothing in return, right? Like helping people, and holding doors for geezers and all that crap,”

You roll your eyes. That’s just basic decency. You don’t understand where your dad is trying to go with all this, but you try to be patient and hear him out.

”Helping people and having a good heart is an important part of being hero. You’re a kid with big feelings and a big heart. So you know what I think?” he asks.

You shake your head. ”What?”

”I think that even without a stupid Quirk, you’re already a kick-ass hero. And I don’t wanna hear you say otherwise, okay?” he says, reaching out to ruffle your hair. “You’re my goddamn daughter, you were born with greatness in your blood. Those punks at school are gonna have hell rain down on them and their parents if they even think about talking you down. Don’t be afraid to put those idiots in their place,”

You look away from your dad again, but you feel a bit better now. Even if this is just the start, you’re grateful for your dad— even if you were a bit of an ass towards him. “Dad…” you groan, knocking his hand off your head. “Stop it,” Katsuki laughs a bit and sighs.

“You’re tough as nails, with or without a power. And I love you just the same, understand? You’re the best damn kid in the world, I mean that. Even though you’re always so damn moody—“

”Dad!” You complain again, puffing your cheeks as they burned red with embarrassment.

“Cool it, Firecracker. I’m just messing with ya,”
