Jack Montrose "Arranged by Montrose" Featuring Bob Gordon, Clifford Brown, Zoot Sims, Russ Freeman, and Shelly Manne ウエスト・コーストのマイナー・レーベル #PacificJazzRecords から名演復刻盤。 1955年前後モダン・ジャズの前期で、渋めのマニア受けするアルバムを5枚ほど。 初めは、J.モントローズ本人名義ではない2枚の10 inch LPから彼の名演をピックアップしたアルバムで、共通しているのは編曲者がJ.モントローズだと言う点。そして本盤は、東芝EMIがパシフィック・ジャズ創立40周年に向けて放つ！｢パシフィック・ジャズLPオリジナル・コレクション｣(PJ-1214)。 LAのジャズ・クラブ｢ヘイグ｣の広報担当でミュージシャンと親交を深めたリチャード・ボックが、｢ジミー・ロウルズ(p)のレコードを作りたかった｣との理由でわずか350ドルの資本金で設立したのがパシフィック・ジャズ。 まず、Side 1は... This commercial was shot by Bob Gordon for Djarum Super! It was a representation of the first ever hot air balloon highline walk staring Sketchy Andy Lewis. Hayley Ashburn, Sylvan Christensen, Brent Cain, Alex Mason, and Felix Carrera also played influential roles in the production!~

       Bob Gordon called me and invited me to repeat the hot air balloon stunt we loved creating.  I couldn’t wait to plan and try to successfully walk another balloon highline!  It was a dream come true the first time, and I couldn’t wait for another attempt.

       I gathered a group of Monkeys and we headed to Las Vegas to film the next attempt. My friends-- Doug and Doug-- a father and son hot air balloon pilots from the first success came and met us.   The first day it was a bit windy but we were going to try anyway.

        As we lifted off the wind started to pick up. It got a bit crazy and started to pull the balloons over jagged rocks and steep hillside.  There was no worry until a jolt startled us as one of the balloon tethers recoiled towards its anchor! All of a sudden the free balloon ride for me and my friends became a heart pounding adventure.  If the other tether broke we would be going for a ride without much of a landing area for miles!

       Now I was wearing a parachute, but we were too low to jump and the pilots made it very clear we had to  stay in the basket. They were also clear that if the other tether broke, we would just be going for a ride. The Dougs yelled back and forth and the wind just played with us like a child running through the park dragging a balloon behind him.  After an exhilarating 20 min ride, we safely landed back on earth, got the envelopes under control, and moved the shoot to the next day.

      On the second day, everything went perfectly smooth.  Our anchors were perfect (helped with a couple of my brand new ropes), our angles were perfect(tied down our biggest cars), and despite staying in Las Vegas-- we all had gotten a great nights sleep!  The stage was set.  

       As we inflated the balloons early in the morning I remember watching the sunrise with my team, all of us smiling ear to ear.  The air was crisp, not a cloud in the sky, and the sun scattered into a million colors.  As the day went on everything went perfectly, and this video Bob Gordon made embodies it perfectly.  ;)

Meeting Bob Gordon

I was browsing in an art shop in Brighton and got talking to Bob Gordon a favourite typographer of mine. I didn't realise it was him until he introduced himself! I have read his books, so it was quite surreal meeting him. I have missed Brighton's art scene. 

Bob Gordon worked in close collaboration for Her Majesty's Government in the establishment of renewed reprographic resources in developing countries both in Africa and the West Indies. His consultancy work in the field of training, teaching, and digital media has been with leading national and international industries including names such as Unilever, Kodak, Martini Bacardi, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and The Oxford University Press. In 1969, as a Beta tester for Quark Inc. he produced an experimental interactive site for Clarion Artists' Agents which was showcased, worldwide, via the QuarkImmedia demonstration CD.

  Bob  worked in many varied fields of graphic design as a practioner both in the public and private sectors. For many years he ran his own design company and became a member of the Chartered Society of Designers. During his career his work has covered publishing, signage, exhibition design, advertising, stationery and publicity.

His work has encompassed design projects as diverse as annual reports, logotypes, posters for London Underground, and for several year his company designed the corporate styling and materials for the Brighton Festival. He has experience within the printing industry and has headed up teams of designers and print personnel. While working within the print industry he developed innovative techniques for large-scale acquisition of electrostatic installations within tightly defined cost benefit parameters. He has written a book on the subject of digital typography with particular reference to the intricate tasks of user defined character tracking, kerning, text/tone control and font management (Making Digital Type Look Good ISBN 0-500-28313-3). In collaboration with Maggie Gordon he has written and co-edited a book on digital design (The Complete Guide to Digital Graphic Design ISBN 0-8230-28560-8) which has been published in the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and has been translated into 8 foreign languages. Bob Gordon is also an avid collector of xylographic ephemera and allied items.
