How did Afrikaners come to speak Dutch, instead of some Bantu language like Zulu or Xhosa, when they arrived in South Africa?
I've came to understand that many people don't know what the term Afrikaner means and the reason behind them calling themselves Afrikaners.
The term Afrikaner is a Dutch or German word meaning Africans. The term Afrikanen is still a Dutch word still used today in the Netherlands. A white person in this case Dutch and Germans settlers who stole our land as South Africans calling himself an Afrikaner is as ludicrous as an English person in South Africa calling himself African.
During Apartheid the Dutch and Germans settlers who sometimes refer to themselves as Boer, a Dutch word for a farmers called themselves Europeans. They had boards all over our country saying Europeans only. It only when Apartheid comes to an end and we want to start taking our land back that they start calling themselves Africans, Afrikaner or White South Africans or White Africans. It all political. They uses all these terms to justify themselves as Europeans why they're fighting South Africans and still holding on into their land and not returning it.
In short Afrikaner or Afrikanen are Africans. The term belongs to us. Since they're Dutch and German with a European heritage they can call themselves Europese, a Dutch word for Europeans which is more appropriate.
They're Dutch and German people not Afrikaner or Afrikanen. They're Europeans still occupying the land of South Africa. They achieve this through European imperialism who threatened South Africa with sanctions if we want to claim our land. They also advocate for white power and white nationalism in our country.

Another reason they call themselves Afrikaner or Afrikanen or Africans is because of identity crisis. They know they're Germans and Dutch but the British oppression and treatment made them feel a ‘bit different’. They're caught between their colonial and hate crimes in South Africa and returning home to Europe and being treated a bit different. Some have began calling themselves the true Vikings because of their brute nature.
The Netherlands have rejected them and don't want anything to do with them. South Africans are also going through the same path and want their land and don't want anything to do with them because of their racism.The country that will soon take them will be the USA and they will be calling themselves Yankees and speaking Amerikaans(Dutch word for American).
