Imagine the hell that must be film and theater casting in the United Federation of Planets!

Like, a wannabe progressive director being like "we're casting an andorian to play curly in our revival of Oklahoma!" And all the conservatives being like "no you can't do that! That's not historically accurate! 😡" meanwhile people have been casting humans of any race in any roles regardless of historical accuracy because these distinctions no longer matter within our species.

Vulcan journalist writing hundred page long op eds about whether or not it's appropriate for non-vulcan actors to be cast as vulcans in their plays and being totally not emotional yet extremely polarized and moralizing about the issue.

More and more writers have been creating stories involving characters of different species to reflect the contemporary reality of federation folk in the more open worlds. But then schools wants to perform these plays and don't have all that diversity in their student body so they have to paint a tellarite blue or draw trill spots on a denobulan. There are thousand and thousands of articles debating if that's incensitive or not.

And how are non-federation species portrayed? Is it offensive to paint a human green to play the villain orion pirate trying to attack the noble starfleet heroine? No one can agree.

A minor diplomatic incident occurs because a movie about the Earth-Romulan War looks to cast vulcans to play the romulans. No one has ever seen vulcans more offended before.

Lord, imagine doing a media studies degree in 2325, wanting to talk about the themes of social apathy in 21st century pre World War 3 cinema but instead you keep getting random people to ask you what you think about the fact they casted a bolian in last year's remake of Parasite 🙄

Star Trek Hyperion starts three years after the dominion war has ended, 2378. The Federation is trying to rebuild relationships with former enemies. Starfleet Command creates an experimental program; the Hyperion becomes a proving ground for integration. They’re testing whether a diverse crew including former adversaries can work together on long-term deep space missions where they can’t just run home when tensions flare.

Zeftan is a Bolian scientist. He’s been working for the Federation since he graduated from the Academy thirty years ago.

He is Chief of Science on the USS Gwaine. He secured the position on the request of Captain Pitcher, an old friend of his. She saw his uniqueness early on, and knew she’d want him close by.

He is very, very smart. Unfortunately, when he’s not elbows-deep in some toxic vat, or wrangling a venomous alien thing, he is also very, very bored.

He is always tinkering and toiling in his lab, walking the ethical line at every opportunity. This is often a benefit to him, as he’s known in the field for his discoveries by unorthodox scientific methods. After all, what better path is there to discovery than the path untaken?

Curious as what killed the cat, he’s often first on the ground in exploratory missions. He is well aware of Federation protocol, and he uses his knowledge to do whatever he wants. On away missions, the crew is briefed to carry an extra Bolian first-aid kit just for him. It’s not that he’s not careful- he’s just curious enough to risk it. Every time.

He has a number of young scientists and employees working underneath him. His subordinates either love him or hate him- and they always respect him eventually.

When working for Zeftan, it is required to have a personal project to work on. Zeftan believes it is important to cultivate and sustain a personal interest in science- in asking questions, and trying stuff out. He pushes his people hard, and heavily encourages the more *wild* ideas.

Zeftan’s goal is to build a small army of mad scientists, ready to discover the universe. Him and his staff have more than earned their “scary-brilliant” reputation.

Brandished with a sly grin, Zeftan brings mischief everywhere he goes. A prankster, through-and-through. His jokes are elaborate, cunning, and devilish. His favorite targets are T’Mei, for her utter density, Yurus, for her vengeful spirit, and Wynn, for his no-nonsense grouchiness. He doesn’t mess with Edson very much- he’s too good of a spirit about it, and it’s no fun.

Sujem knows Zeftan quite well, as both a scientific mind and a friend. They met when Zeftan was fresh out of the Academy. He was already touring scientific conferences and conventions, arguing with other scientists about their papers. He butted heads with Sujem about his xenobiological paper on asteroid density in relation to twin planets. Since then, they’ve met eachother on almost every side of the scientific world. In recent years, they’ve co-written a number of papers together (and against eachother).

To this day, Zeftan’s favorite game is to try and get a rise out of Sujem. It hasn’t worked yet.

Of all the things one could say about Zeftan, he is unapologetically himself- and he has a long career ahead of him to be just that.

Hello im back om my soft Space Sapphics kick so all of these are for Bhea and Muna!!! (And Ceicive's sister if you wanna make it a tripple but no pressure.)

What's the sweetest thing they've ever said to their partner (if they have one)?

What's something they do absentmindedly that their partner (if they have one) finds adorable

What's their favorite thing to do with their partner?

What do they smell like?

Oooh a rare Amae'll set! Honestly I don't have a ton of ideas for her bc I'm usually thinking about Omelas people, but I'll certainly give her a go!

What's the sweetest thing they've ever said to their partner ?:

(I'm going to sort of summarize bc I don't really ever tend to have too much dialogue ideas rather than just sort of scenario ideas):

Muna: Muna's never really shy with compliments to anyone, but Bhea definitely gets blushy little butterflies even after they've been together for ages when Muna compliments her appearance or skills tbh!

Bhea:So I think she's usually more of an acts of service type person beyond maybe sweet/flirty jokes, but one of her overtly sweeter times is early on in their relationship's budding stage when she tells Muna (who's feeling guilty about keeping her "stuck" because she has to finish some work task) that spending time with her, even if they're doing something unthinkably dull, is better than being off on some hollodeck adventure or working on her projects <3

Amae'll: Ooh ok so I don't have set partners for her yet still, but when she compliments someone, like really genuinely compliments them not just something they did or their appearance it's a bit of a rarity and it's very meaningful. She's very guarded emotionally (with good reason), so getting a genuine crack in that shield, even a small one, is a big deal even if it seems small.

What's something they do absentmindedly that their partner (if they have one) finds adorable?

Muna: Her whiskers sort of whuffle and twitch when she's thinking, and sometimes she lets out little walrus-y sounding sighs when she's tired

Bhea: Kind of a mix of adorable and alarming, but when she has something (usually more minor than her typical disasters tbh) go wrong like a pot boiling over and she doesn't want to alarm Muna she'll do a sort of quick shuffle walk with it to a safer area to deal with and make little sounds of alarm like "eep eep eep eep eeeep." , which is pretty uncharacteristic for her usual goofy chill vibe where she'd just kind of try and deal with it quickly XD

Amae'll: Point out the names of plants she sees! She picked up a lot of knowledge from J'hren and it's one of the things that will slip out that hint at her past to the people she knows now.

What's their favorite thing to do with their partner?:

Muna: When she gets the chance to, she really likes to go swimming in real water with Bhea! On a more regular basis, probably cooking!

Bhea: She's honestly pretty chill to do most anything with Muna, but I think she has a lot of fun doing Hollodeck adventures or movie equivalents

Amae'll: I tend to think of most of her dates as rather casual thus far, and when she's off the clock she tends to like to go poking around at night markets & carnivals that are common on the planet she's on. (With a longer term relationship I think she'd maybe really enjoy going on library or bookshop dates though <3)

What do they smell like?:

Muna: a sort of fish oil mixed with vanilla type smell; It's from an oil gland in her follicles that helps keep her warm in cold climates!

Bhea: normally kind of citricly acidic, but if she'd eaten something particularly rotted or toxic the smell takes on a sort of spicier smell to it from processed digestive enzymes

Amae'll: On the job not like much; She has to use stuff with low to minimal chemical reactivity risk. Off the job: Sort of like a deeper smokey floral smell, like flowers on a bonfire.
