2023 Highlight: All That Consumes Us
Everyone knows the students in Corbin College’s elite academic society, Magni Viri, have it all—free tuition, inspirational professors, and dream jobs once they graduate. So when Tara is offered a chance to enroll, she takes it.
But once she’s settled into the gorgeous Victorian dormitory the academy calls home, something strange starts to happen. She finally has the chance to write, but her stories are dark and twisted. When she’s not sleepwalking, she’s dreaming about being trapped in a coffin, buried alive. And she’s starting to feel an unseen presence stalking her through the halls of her dorm.
As Tara slowly loses her grip on everything she’s ever known, she discovers a terrible secret at the heart of Magni Viri, one that just might turn her dreams into nightmares, one that might destroy her before she has a chance to escape.

Book Highlight!
No. 6 by Atsuko Asami and Hinoki Kino
What it’s about:
Shion has been living in the privileged area of No. 6, but all of that is at risk when he helps an injured boy his age. Rat/Nezumi is labeled as a criminal in No. 6, so Shion’s help is nothing less than a crime. Despite him trying to keep a low profile to deflect and further harm to his status and reputation, Shion stumbles upon one of No. 6 secrets... and he’s going to have to pay. To repay the old debt, Rat gets Shion away from No. 6, but how will he survive in the wastes beyond the security he’s always known. Will he save No. 6 or destroy it in revenge?
Why it’s worth a highlight:
Shion and Rat!
This canon gay couple fights for survival in this dystopian series! What I love about this series, is that it’s LGBT, but romance is not its main genre. I will always love the fluffy LGBT stories, but variety is the spice of life and this dystopia is not only a nice change of pace, it’s an incredibly good series. Rat and Shion seldom agree on anything regarding No. 6, but they respect and care for one another enough to keep each other safe during this trying time. They compromise and sacrifice for each other in the hopes of stopping No. 6 and keeping one another alive.
I am not your perfect Mexican daughter.
I wish this book existed when I was in high school. so many familiar feelings of not measuring to the expectations of your immigrant, Mexican parents. Feeling like you are in between two worlds -- between the ones your non-Mexican friends live in (or friends with “cooler” parents) and the world your parents come from, hundreds of miles away. Between religious traditions that mean being ungrateful is a sin, and mental illness which makes feeling anything feel far away. Always being measured against someone else who is willing to live within the traditional roles and expectations set by family -- or at least keep everything else a secret. The struggle between living your real life in secret to keep the peace, or out loud and facing the chaos that comes. And, of course, this book is based in Chicago. Listened to it on CD.
