Required reading - although the only Austen I actually studied at school was Northanger Abbey, which is the only one I don't own. Did anyone else study Austen? If I'd been able to take an exam on Pride & Prejudice it wouldn't have been so stressful! • Also most hated character. Controversial, but I never liked Emma. I know the story's about her learning to be a better person, but she spends so long being so insufferable that it's too little too late, for me. Favourite fictional world for #bookishgalsoct & book that made me frustrated for #spooktacularbooks • How can it be both, you ask? Well. You may have already noticed I'm absolute trash for nautical fantasy. This has it all. Pirates. Sea serpents. Sentient talking ships - how often do you see those? Brilliant worldbuilding with culture clashes and intricate politics all over the place. And dragons. I could read about this world all day. • And then the last book. I was enjoying it, and enjoying it, and there was danger and romance and excitement and basically everything I look for in a story... but the ending felt flat. Too neat. Everyone paired off nicely, no major deaths amongst the heroes... Scary books for #bookishgalsoct day 10. I don't read much horror. This is more sci-fi but it gave me nightmares for months. Mainly because I was an impressionable 11 year old who probably shouldn't have been given free range in the teen section of the library, in retrospect. It's about surviving nuclear war and holocaust, and was terrifyingly plausible. #bookishgalsoct (ugly covers) & #spooktacularbooks (gifted books) • All of these were gifts over the years. Three nice, restrained covers. And then book 2, which I somehow got in a totally different edition, which is annoying enough anyway, but... OMG, where to start. Apart from the general cheesiness of it, take a good look at what I think is supposed to be Melisande. Yes, that's her in the bottom left corner, with the flattering 80s hair and the physically impossible breasts. #submergedinoctobermagic is #bookbag today. Luckily, I have a lot of those. These are two of my favourites! ☔🎧 . Unfortunately I don't have a leaf bookmark for #bookishgalsoct but now I really want one. As I am reading the challenge I am in my pyjamas cooking, I worked until 8 this evening. And I won't go outside like this looking for one in the dark. There are almost no trees around so I don't think I will have much luck. If I do find a beautiful one later I promise to post it asap! 🍁🍃 . I started reading The Star-Touched Queen today and liking it so far. It does remind me a bit of The Wrath and the Dawn but the heroine is a bit underwhelming to me at the moment. Everything can change with the next chapter though! I finished A Shadow Bright and Burning and I am of two minds about it. I see some obvious weaknesses but I did like it a lot in the sense that it set up the story for great things to come. So I mostly like its promise. I will put up a review but I am so far behind on my blog that the task seems a bit daunting now. 5 books ready for review and no time this weekend. Tomorrow I am having some quality sibling time and the day after I am meeting old friends for lunch 💚 .
