Slade House by David Mitchell
My Rating: 3.8

Goodreads Summary:
Down the road from a working-class British pub, along the brick wall of a narrow alley, if the conditions are exactly right, you’ll find the entrance to Slade House. A stranger will greet you by name and invite you inside. At first, you won’t want to leave. Later, you’ll find that you can’t. Every nine years, the house’s residents — an odd brother and sister — extend a unique invitation to someone who’s different or lonely: a precocious teenager, a recently divorced policeman, a shy college student. But what really goes on inside Slade House? For those who find out, it’s already too late...
My Review:
I have to admit that I firstly had problems getting into the book. As I hopefully understood correctly, the synopsis takes place in the same universe as “The Bone Clocks”, which might be the reason why I didn’t understand everything. Nevertheless, I kept reading and ended up quite liking this book.
I am afraid of telling you a bit of the synopsis, as it could give away some spoilers, and I don’t want that. The story ranges over several decades, many characters, and many viewpoints, which made it very hard for me to get into the book. But it was so worth it especially because the author’s writing style is so unique, very intense, and artful! The story is odd and would have immediately pulled me in were it not for the many viewpoints, which confused the heck out of me in the beginning.
I didn’t like a lot of the characters, but they still were compelling and felt totally necessary to the plot. There’s no particular reason why I didn’t like them, they are complex and fleshed out, some of them weren’t just my cup of tea :D If you would ask me what genre this novel is, I couldn’t really tell you. I feel like it is a mix of horror, haunted house fiction, and fiction. Even though I had problems with the book at first, I can highly recommend it to you!
