The Secret Language of Kuro - [Kakashi Hatake x Original Male Character]
The shared apartment was a study in polite distance. Ryu, a quiet Architecture major, and Kakashi, a perennially exhausted premed student, existed in the same space like two celestial bodies in separate orbits. The only bridge between them was Kuro, a sleek black cat with a penchant for chaos and a deep love for Ryu’s expensive drafting paper.
Because Kakashi lived in the library, Ryu had become the silent guardian of the cat. He fed him, brushed him, and—when he was sure Kakashi wasn't looking—watched from the doorway as Kakashi showered the cat with the affection Ryu secretly craved.
I wish he looked at me like that, Ryu would think, watching Kakashi murmur sweet nonsense into Kuro’s fur.
When Ryu opened his eyes the next morning, the world was terrifyingly large. His bed felt like a vast, quilted continent, and his alarm clock sounded like a construction site. He tried to groan, but all that came out was a high-pitched, frustrated meow.
He froze. He looked down at his "hands," only to find two velvet-soft, black paws. He caught his reflection in the full-length mirror and nearly hissed. He was Kuro.
Before he could spiral into a panic, the front door clicked. Kakashi was home early, looking utterly spent, his silver hair windswept and his tie loosened.
"Kuro? Where's my favorite boy?" Kakashi called out, his voice dropping into that soft, melodic tone he only used in private.
Ryu—now Kuro—didn't have time to hide. Kakashi scooped him up, and for the first time in three years, Ryu felt the warmth of Kakashi’s chest and the strength of his arms. It was intoxicating. Kakashi flopped onto his bed, pulling "Kuro" onto his chest, burying his face in the soft fur behind Ryu's ears.
"You won't believe the day I had, buddy," Kakashi sighed, his fingers scratching that perfect spot right at the base of Ryu’s new tail. Ryu couldn't help it; a loud, vibrating purr rumbled through his tiny ribcage.
"I saw him in the kitchen this morning," Kakashi whispered into the fur. "He looked so tired, Kuro. I wanted to make him coffee, but I just stood there like an idiot and asked if we were out of milk. Why am I like this?"
Ryu stilled. Him?
"I think I'm going to do it Friday," Kakashi continued, his voice muffled and shy. "I bought those fancy pens he likes. The drafting ones. I'm going to leave them on his desk with a note. Do you think Ryu would say yes if I asked him to dinner? Or am I just the annoying roommate with the cat?"
Ryu’s feline heart hammered. The scratching stopped, and Kakashi pulled him back to look him in the eye, his gaze raw and vulnerable.
"He’s so brilliant, Kuro. Every time I see him working on those models, I just want to sit there and watch him for hours. But I don't want to creep him out." Kakashi kissed the top of Ryu’s head. "Wish me luck, little guy. I really, really like him."
The room blurred. The scent of Kakashi’s sandalwood soap intensified until it was overwhelming, and suddenly, the bed felt small again.
Ryu gasped, sitting bolt upright in his own bed, his heart racing. He looked down—human hands. Human legs. He was back.
He scrambled out of bed and threw open his door, nearly colliding with Kakashi in the narrow hallway. Kakashi looked startled, his hand still hovering as if he’d been about to knock.
"Ryu! Sorry, I didn't mean to—"
Ryu didn't let him finish. He looked at Kakashi—really looked at him—and saw the exact same nervous shimmer in his eyes that he'd seen from the perspective of a cat ten minutes ago.
"The pens," Ryu blurted out, his voice cracking. "And Friday. The answer is yes."
Kakashi froze, his brain visibly short-circuiting. "I... how did you... I haven't even..."
Ryu leaned against the doorframe, a slow, knowing smirk spreading across his face. "Let's just say a little bird—or a cat—told me. And Kakashi? You’re not just the roommate. You’re definitely not annoying."
Kakashi’s confusion slowly melted into a stunned, brilliant smile. "I should give Kuro an extra treat tonight."
"Yeah," Ryu laughed, feeling lighter than he ever had. "You definitely should."
