it's always the same with us.

summary: you and rooster have a FWB relationship. (based on after a few by travis denning). t/w: cursing, drinking.
you and rooster were not good together.
well, okay... you were good together. but that was the extent of it.
it wasn't like the two of you didn't try to take the relationship past the bedroom. believe me, tried and tried you did, but it never worked. it was hard to put your finger on exactly what it was. two people who fit so perfectly in one scenario, but not in any others was the worst thing that could happen.
it had been a few months since your paths crossed in the hard deck, but the moment you clocked him across the bar, you knew how the night would end. he noticed you the second you did him, and he fed you a knowing smile.
"how ya been?" he asked as you approached him. he held his arm out to envelope you in a hug. he nodded at penny, silently asking her to put your drinks on his tab. she shook her head at the two of you and handed you a refill.
rooster sat on the barstool and pulled you between his legs, successfully eliminating the height difference. his hands slid around your ass, tugging you closer against him.
your hands rested on the tops of his thighs. his hands slid from your ass up to your hips. rooster's mouth kissed under your ear. "it's been a while," he said into your ear. his hot breath against your ear caused a shiver to run through your body. he hummed into your neck at the visceral reaction.
"it always ends the same with us," you comment.
rooster shrugs. "and i don't really give a fuck, babe."
you hold each other's gaze and you both down drink number one. you wave at penny, and two more drinks materialize in front of you. taking them into your hands, rooster pulls you out onto the dance floor. a slow country songs croons from the jukebox. there isn't a spot where your bodies aren't touching. rooster runs the hand not holding his beer up your spine. a moan escaped your lips and rooster smirked.
"god, that never gets old," he said on a kiss. "no other women in the world reacts to me the way you do." he was so cocky, but you loved it.
you ran a hand on the waistband of his jeans and a groan sat deep in his throat. "yeah, i'd have to say the same about you."
"touche."
and the end of a couple songs, and drinks number two, rooster led you to the bar. penny placed drinks number three down and gave you a what are you doing look. rooster's hands remained glued to your waist. all you could do was shrug.
"you know if we drink these, you're going to be in my bed tonight," rooster murmured in your ears.
"that is typically what happens after three drinks," you comment. rooster pulls your face toward him for the first public kiss of the evening.
when he pulled away, he held your gaze. "well okay, bottoms up." rooster threw his drink back. he slammed his glass on the counter and grinned. the quick intake of alcohol had your mind swimming. “beautiful,” he said, tilting your head up to him.
“pay the tab, roos,” you murmured, kissing his jaw line. as he handed penny the money, you hung onto him. rooster led you out of the bar toward his bronco.
leading you to the passenger door, he pushed you against it. "i've got to sober up just a little." he kissed you against the door as if his life depended on it. his body caged yours in, leaning sexily against the car, keeping his weight off you. he reached a hand to your face, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear.
"or you could call an uber?" you suggested against his lips. rooster's hands slipped under your ass and he lifted you up, guiding your legs around his waist. "i only need like twenty minutes." his lips trailed along your neck, sucking on the sweet spot under your ear.
"in twenty minutes we might talk ourselves out of this," you said, moving his face to look into his eyes. rooster chuckled against your skin, the sound reverberating throughout your body.
"not going to happen," he said on a kiss. rooster set you down and opened the door to the bronco. he slid in, pulling you onto his lap. as your thighs settled on either side of him, you brought your hands to his neck. smiling down at him, you connected your lips. rooster met your smile with one of his own.
"i decided the second i saw you, i was waking up next to you in the morning."
you rolled your eyes. "how do you know i'm not going to slip out before you wake up?" rooster's eyes held a challenge.
"because you didn't the last two times."
he got you there. accepting defeat, you pulled him to you for another kiss. "remind me again why we don't work past this?" he asked you.
"you sure are talking a lot," you murmur. his hand moves under your shirt. his featherlight touch earning goosebumps along your body. he stops just below your breast, gently running his hands back and forth.
"i'm just trying to understand," he said, his voice sounded almost sad. "no one else feels like this."
"roos, you have about five seconds to drop it before i call an uber to my apartment...alone." you didn't have the capacity to talk about the strings that come along with relationships. it didn't work and that was that.
rather than miss out on a night without you, rooster drops the conversation. he kissed your cheek, and then pulled you against him in a hug. "it's always the same with us, roos," you said for the second time that evening. reminding him that it's the same song and dance no matter what happens. the two of you exist to mutually benefit the other. always flitting through the other's life at the exact moment those benefits are needed.
"let's get home," he murmured. he maneuvered out from underneath you and over to the driver's seat. home.
as he pulled out the parking lot, he fed you a heart stopping smile. he reached over and flicked your chin lightly. you leaned your head back against the seat and looked toward him. "when we get to your apartment, i want the same energy from you as you had in that bar."
"as if there is any other energy in existence when it comes to you," he winked.
masterlist.
