Brain Upload
Subtext: "I just spent 20 minutes deciding whether to start an email with 'Hi' or 'Hey', so I think it transferred correctly."
Was just thinking about how if someone dies and you had a copy of their personality stored on a hard drive, would you know the difference if you talked to it? What if I'm a copy? Am I even alive or am I just expressing some uploaded personality?

Scientists develop Matrix-style technique of ‘feeding’ information directly into your brain
Anyone who has ever watched a sci-fi film and wished they could upload information to their brain in seconds could be in luck.
Scientists have developed a way of amplifying learning in a way that almost mimics the methods used in The Matrix.
In the film, Neo – played by Keanu Reeves – has a range of kung-fu skills ‘uploaded’ directly into his brain in just a few seconds.

Brain Implants Will Repair and Augment Us in the Near Future
Brain Implants, machines that will be surgically implanted into a person’s brain to perform one or more functions, are going to be reality in the very near future. And the technology has gotten far enough for us to at least categorize what many of these implants will possibly do once we’ve developed them. We understand that most if not all will fall into two main categories: Restorative…

Theory vs. Reality
Ok, abstract theory vs. theoretical reality. Potential theoretical reality. Alright, alright, it's all hypothetical - just listen.
Anyway, in the great transporter debate, I was always firmly on the "Beam me up, Scotty" side. I figured, if my "me" was a combination of memories and molecules, then what did it matter if there was no physical continuity? The mass of molecules destroyed at the originating transporter pad would be indistinguishable from the mass of molecules that stepped off the receiving pad, so still the same person. I dismissed people who insisted it was death and impersonation as fluffy new-agers who thought the "soul" was irreplaceable. I was very smug.
Then I read an article about the possibility of uploading human consciousness into computers by 2050. Where this article falls on the whack-job-o-meter is left to the reader. But I figured that meant I only had to live to be 78 to achieve virtual immortality. Great! I can see if we ever establish successful off-world colonies. This is literally the biggest reason why I try to believe in life after death. It drives me nuts to think I'll never find out.
Then I had a flash that was perilously close to a moment of clarity (a phenomenon I normally avoid with rigorous self-discipline) and wondered if I'd actually like existing in a computer system. Robot body or otherwise, it would take some getting used to. Then I wondered, would it really be me? Or just a computer loaded with the accumulated data of my lifetime? Alison vs Cameron. For someone who takes pride in existing almost completely within my own head, it was weird to think about. I've been relentless in my efforts to define myself entirely by my brain. But apparently, I value my own flesh and blood, and I wouldn't really want to do without them.
