I fear that we have lost the plot with offensive jokes. Reminder that an offensive joke is only funny if the group of people who it would be deemed offensive to also finds it funny, and half of the time I would say that most people would not find it funny.
But hey, what do I know? I'm not the morality police.
edit: also obviously not everyone in a group is the same. i would assume that you just shouldn't make it if i were you
I think the big difference between young Millennial and Gen Z offensive humor vs like older Millennial and Gen X humor is Gen X tends to punch down more and joke about racism and homophobia because there was this impression those weren’t a real issue anymore. This is because of the theory of the end of history in the 2010s where it was believed there was actual equality in the west and “There will be no more war only conflicts”
Gen Z on the other hand grew up seeing these problems are very much still real, they saw that the peace and equality weren’t really there. I think a lot of Gen Z dark humor comes from apathy and disillusionment. Majority of Gen Z offensive humor punches up or straight. Mocking politicians, celebrities, scandals, interests, Law enforcement or personal beliefs.
There is still Gen X style offensive humor with Gen Z, see most alt right jokes. Though it’s less popular, Gen Z offensive humor also is more likely to have a punchline instead of the entire joke being “I can’t believe someone would say that and that’s why it’s funny”
TLDR: Gen Z’s offensive jokes usually punch up or straight and joke to cope with the failure of the world while Gen X and older Millennials offensive jokes root from the idea that every problem was solved so the issues are safe to joke about now.

Yeah, not surprised that Brandon Rodger’s ended up being controversial at all. Credit to taco.junk on tiktok. Didn’t mention it much before because my focus was on the writers in general when it came to both, Hazbin and Helluva. That and I hadn’t found any specifics at the time but his humor made me suspicious and the fact that he was friends with Viv. His humor reminds eerily of Shane Dawson’s humor.
Yet I didn’t feel like bringing up my own complaints as I didn’t have the full information. Again, like the tadc situation, I don’t assume someone is bad because they know bad people. You never know how familiar people are behind the scenes and what they are and aren’t aware of it.
Not all of Helluva Boss is written by Viv as Brandon is a major writer on Helluva. This is what bothered me about criticism regarding Viv and HB. Brandon Rodger’s has the same “humor” as she does and is the reason the whole romance plot exists between Stolas and Blitz in the first place.
Due to him being a main writer and semi-familiar with his old videos I came across in my high school years, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was responsible for the more controversial “jokes”. One of his first lines in the first episode in Helluva involves Blitz threatening to assault Moxie during a mission. It doesn’t help his entire channel is built on literal offensive humor and racial stereotypes.
Additional note, this is what bugs me about comedians like him. They assume they can get away with harmful jokes when they involve all races and identities. It’s the same excuse people make for South Park. Just because they make fun of everyone and everything doesn’t absolve the harm you’re contributing to an oppressed group. Being part of minorities yourself, doesn’t absolve you of being harmful toward minorities either.
I’m just glad we’re having a conversation about this, finally. I felt crazy for seeing the red flags.
The term "Bushmen," now often considered pejorative, originated from the 17th-century Dutch term "Bosjesmans," meaning "people of the bush," and was used to refer to the San people, the indigenous hunter-gatherers of Southern Africa
While the term "Bushmen" is still used, it's now often considered derogatory or offensive by many South Africans, and the term "San" is preferred in official contexts
"X isn't funny"
I'm sorry to inform you that humor is subjective and that something being offensive to you personally in some way doesn't make it not funny.
There can definitely be a conversation about whether some jokes are too offensive... but I don't think simply saying a joke isn't funny does anything to change the minds of people who enjoy the joke.
