In the community garden of Westray, Orkney, the Vicia faba (broad bean) plants were flowering. The plants were protected by a low tunnel but are now coping with the weather. This project by the Westray Development Trust aims to produce quality fresh fruit and vegetables for the island which sits at the edge of the Orkney archipelago; as a result there is a long wholesale supply chain for fresh produce. The beans will be sold in the local shops keeping the food miles to a minimum, in some cases under a mile!

Posada (Sardinia). New trips to Sardinia. Main access door and Casteddu de sa Fae (Castle of the broad bean), 12th century taq. The territory of Posada has been inhabited since ancient times, certainly before the fifth century BC. It overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea and is indicated as a Punic-Etruscan center, having to do with the colony of Feronia, due to the discovery of numerous archaeological finds. The etymolygia would come from the Latin Pausata, corresponding to the vulgar Spanish Posada, place of Rest - in Sardinian, Pausada. The castle, of the King judges period, initially had defensive purposes and with its erection the town was also fortified (two gates are still standing). Today is the last day of May and a bit of trivia to celebrate this month. Did you know that there is an inseparable relationship between May Grand Sumo Tournament and （ソラマメ、空豆、broad (fava) beans）? In May, if you go to Ryogoku Kokugikan to see the sumo tournament, they will be selling broad beans. From the old days, it was almost like a tradition to eat broad beans and watched sumo. For that reason I was told by farmers in the Boso region, Chiba, that they would try to adjust their harvest and shipping to the schedule of the May tournament.
