In the community garden of Westray, Orkney, the Vicia faba (broad bean) plants were flowering. The plants were protected by a low tunnel but are now coping with the weather. This project by the Westray Development Trust aims to produce quality fresh fruit and vegetables for the island which sits at the edge of the Orkney archipelago; as a result there is a long wholesale supply chain for fresh produce. The beans will be sold in the local shops keeping the food miles to a minimum, in some cases under a mile!

Just don’t chop after it is setting #beans , then fava plants divert #Nitrogen to the beans, which u don’t want that to happen! Today is the last day of May and a bit of trivia to celebrate this month. Did you know that there is an inseparable relationship between May Grand Sumo Tournament and （ソラマメ、空豆、broad (fava) beans）? In May, if you go to Ryogoku Kokugikan to see the sumo tournament, they will be selling broad beans. From the old days, it was almost like a tradition to eat broad beans and watched sumo. For that reason I was told by farmers in the Boso region, Chiba, that they would try to adjust their harvest and shipping to the schedule of the May tournament.
