As funny as I found it, I never really understood where the whole ‘Gotham thinks Bruce Wayne and Batman are dating’ thing came from. Like, there have been a lot of very logical explanations/reasonings that people have come up with, but I never could find anything that would be where the idea originated from some kind of canon. And I still haven’t seen anything in comics (which doesn’t mean it isn’t there, just that it’s not there in the comics I’ve read) BUT:

Watching the 1966 TV show has made me understand it well. Batman is running around like “my friend Bruce Wayne” this and “my friend Bruce Wayne” that. He’s saying “I think I can speak for my good friend Bruce Wayne when I say…” when he’s commenting on something that literally just happened and there’s no way he and Bruce Wayne could have chatted about it.

He’s definitely playing the part of someone who knows Bruce Wayne very well. And after you’ve debunked ‘Bruce Wayne=Batman’… well, there are a few directions you could go.
