First and foremost. THIS.
This at the very least looks like genuine surprise from Dostoyevsky. And it's so important to me that he didn't make this face because of Ranpo, or Dazai, but because of Atsushi.
Out of everyone, Atsushi is the one to surprise him. I believe this is because Dostoyevsky really couldn't predict that Atsushi was going to do this. It's important because Dostoyevsky has been predicting more or less every single move they've made so far; especially the decisions made by Dazai and Ranpo, despite them being up to par with his intelligence. So why couldn't he predict Atsushi?
I think it's actually just because of that. He could predict Dazai and Ranpo because he knows what he would have done in their situations.
In fact, Dazai already hinted at this whole thing with "Because that's what I would have done in your shoes". They predict eachother cuz they know what they would have done.
Atushi is not on the same wavelength as him. In fact, Atsushi says that he realised where Dostoyevsky was simply on instinct.
Atsushi is much smarter than we as a fandom tend to admit, because he's not the same smart as "the geniuses". Dostoyevsky couldn't calculate this happening because Atsushi didn't calculate what he did, either. He knew pretty much on the spot what he had to do.
poor guy…
I feel like we should've known this was going to happen considering Fyodor looks like he was just meant to be wearing those clothes
