“In the company’s view, yo, they’ve hit the jackpot
Hazy belief, that is the base of my success”
October 2010
In October Bang Sihyuk gathered a group of managers to watch footage from their recent national hip hop competition, Hit It.
“So, Choi Ikjae, aka i11evn is the winner,” Jungsook reported afterwards. “Here’s his file.” She put it down in front Bang Sihyuk.
“The way I choose someone isn’t by looking at their file, Jungsook-ssi.”
She sighed. “I know, I know. If they love music, that’s a good enough place for you to start with.”
He nodded.
“And from what I’ve seen of this footage, I would bet that i11evn does love music.”
“Does anyone else from the footage stand out to you?” Jungshook asked.
“Hmmm… yes, the runner up,” Bang said. “I like his attitude.”
Jungsook nodded. “I’ll give him a call.”
“No, I’ll do it myself,” Bang told her. Jungsook raised an eyebrow at him, but said nothing, just nodding again. Aviva flipped through the files until she found one with the picture of the runner up. His name was Min Yoongi. He was an underground rapper under the name Gloss.
November 7th 2010
There was a knock on the conference room door.
Aviva got up and opened the door. Her eyes widened.
“Sajang-nim!” She dipped her head. Her brow furrowed. “Or is it… Huijangnim?
“Ah, Bang-PD is fine…” Bang looked at her thoughtfully, tapping his chin. “You’re Jungsook-ssi’s assistant… I can’t remember your name.”
Her shoulders drooped. “Chen Aviva,” she told him. She noticed there was a boy standing behind him. He looked about her age. His hair was gelled into a pointy quiff. Silver studs glinted on his ears. She recognized him.
“Where does the name Aviva come from?” Bang wondered. “It’s Hebrew,” she told him. “It means something like spring.”
Bang’s eyes lit up. “Ah, Bom-ssi! That’s much easier to remember,” he thought. The boy smirked. Aviva frowned at him slightly. “Bom-ssi, this is Gloss. Gloss, Bom-ssi. She’ll walk you through that contract, answer any questions you have.”
“Thank you, Bang-PDnim,” Gloss said, bowing slightly. Bang waved as he left the room, shutting the door behind him. “Nice, to meet you, Bom-ssi.”
Aviva sighed. “Please, just call me Aviva.”
“I’m Min Yoongi,” he said. “How old are you?”
“17 years old,” she told him.
“I’m 18.” He hovered by the doorway, even as she sat back down, opening the file and laying the contract on the table in front of the seat next to her. His stare was uncomfortably intense. She wanted to squirm in her chair, but sat straighter instead, meeting his eyes.
“Any questions, Yoongi-ssi?”
“How long have you been working here? What kind of influence do you have? I’m not sure you’re the right person for me to be talking with, Bom-ssi.”
“It’s Aviva. But maybe you’re right. I’ve been working here for a year. I’m an assistant manager, so I don’t have much influence. But you’ve already had several talks with Bang-PDnim, and he decided to leave you here with me, so it seems like he thought we’d be able to work things out between ourselves. Why don’t trust his judgement and do our best?”
Yoongi smiled, more softly than she would have expected.
“You’ve got a point, Aviva-ssi…” And then his smile dissolved into a nonchalant look. He shoved his hands in his pockets. “Bang-PDnim initially said I’d be able to join as a producer, but he’s been trying to convince me to join as rapper instead—For the hip hop group.”
Aviva nodded. “He’s been looking for candidates for that group. He seems to think you’d be a good fit. What do you think?”
He blinked at her.
“What do I think? I thought we were just trusting in Bang-PDnim’s judgement.”
“Yes, but it’s your decision ultimately, whether to sign or not. It’s your career, your life you’ve got to consider.”
“… I want to do it,” he said after a moment. “I want more people to hear my music. Doing it on my own isn’t cutting it. I need to take the chance.” He finally sat down in the chair next to her. He stared at the first sheet of the contract. “This is a lot… you’ll go through it with me?”
She smiled. “Of course. It might take a while. Would you like some tea or something?”
“Coffee?”
“Sure. One moment.” She stepped out and came back with a mug for each of them. “Okay.” She reached into her bag, pulled out her Korean law book, and put it down on the table between them with a thump. “Let’s do this.”
He sucked a breath in through his teeth and nodded. “Alright.”
A few days later, Namjoon texted her to let her know that, while seeming kind of shy at first, as he warmed up Yoongi exhibited a quick wit and a dry sense of humor that had him fitting in well with the other boys.
