Hidden in the labyrinthine alleyways behind the Bund of British Concession Shanghai, the Daoming Academy of Shanghai was established shortly after the fall of the Qing Dynasty and heavily funded by British and French wizards who profited from the Opium War. Surviving both muggle conflicts such as World War II and the civil war shortly after, as well as persecution against wizards as a declaration of China’s political progress and industrialization, Daoming has become one of the leading academic institutions in the East Asian wizarding world.
For the most part, students at Daoming lead lives closely integrated in their urban, non-magic surroundings, and very rarely use their magic in the open, even though there is no explicit law in the Magical Federation of China that regulates magical practice. Admission to Daoming is strictly determined by candidates’ affiliation to the eight great families that extend almost oligarchical control over Magical Shanghai’s trade and politics. Blood descendants and kin in family branches are automatically enrolled, while lesser-known families or muggle-born wizards must find sponsorship from one of the Eight before their applications are considered.
Almost all of the famous Chinese diplomats, politicians, and financiers come from Daoming, and membership in this network, often bolstered by marriages and business ties, have made Shanghainese wizards immensely wealthy and immensely proud. The exclusivity of alumni’s tight circles can often appear conservative and even secretive to outsiders, to the point where many wizards in Shanghai do not know of the Eight and their spheres of influence. However, the younger generations of Daoming graduates are beginning to expand their connections beyond magical communities in the old British Empire, and their entrepreneurial spirits have fared well in both the United States and South America.
In addition to courses in communications, finance, and political science (which are almost never offered in other wizarding schools), Daoming is known for its extensive library collection on ancient Chinese magic as well as Western practices. Some of the better-known classes include: Weather Manipulation, Communicating with Natural Spirits, Weapon Enchantment, Spell-casting Media, Ink-spells and Curses, and Western Incantation Analysis. In addition, Daoming has dedicated a team of faculty and staff to establish the Conservation Institute, which studied magical artifacts in various Chinese culture groups, and is funded by alumni to buy back Chinese artworks and antiques looted by Western wizards during the turmoil of the 19th century.

My worst hairstyle was a bowl cut parted down the middle. It was the '90s. It was what you did. I had that from 4th grade until freshman year in high school. I'm glad the pictures exist. I had great hair back then.
Today I turned 22! To celebrate with you all, I figured I can make some URL edits?? This isn’t going to be a huge thing, but I hope that you might also give me some inspiration for future edits? Without further ado:
- mbf me :)
- reblog to spread the birthday love!
- send me:
your preferred url (disclaimer: if it’s not HP, I might not do it - or I might message you for clarifications)
[optional] items that you think might fit in an arts & antiques auction held in Borgin & Burkes! See these posters by my better half Reb @durmstranqs for reference. I’m hoping to make a series of auction lot edits, so that the final product looks like an auction catalogue of magical antiques. The theme is “East meets West”.
And that’s it! Give me as much details as you want for the url edits, and I promise I’ll get to them ❤
