It rolled!

It did crack, but the icing cover that up.

Now the structure! With a chocolate filling, yum!

Icing! It is chocolate, but I added black and brown food colouring for a more authentic bark colour.

Looks more like a log from this angle, lol.

I scored it with a fork for a more authentic bark look.

And every rotting log needs some moss.

(Rotting log does not sound very appetizing.)

Bonjour à tous Un repas tres léger et tout simple pour Noël mais délicieux . Mini specy au oeufs de lump rouge et noir et d'autre garnie d'avocat, une crevette posée dessus avec un peu de zest de citron vert. When my brothers and sister and I were all little, Mother did not have the time to make a Buche de Noel, even if she had had the inclination. With all of us moving about, there simply wasn't a window for her to bake a cake in a jelly roll pan, roll it up to cool and then reconstruct it.

When he worked in Cleveland, Daddy often stopped by bakeries to bring home treats. For different holidays, he brought home different delights. A couple of years, he brought home what he always referred to as Yule Logs. These might have come from the Hough Bakery, a bakery beloved by everyone who ever bought anything they ever created, or some other bakery perhaps located in the old Cleveland Arcade. We kids loved the exotic appearance of these cakes that were rolled in such a way as to allow all that extra frosting!

A true "buche" is surely made from a chocolate cake made from scratch with special chocolate icing and I actually bought a jelly roll pan, but the more I thought about it, I realized that I am not exactly a skilled baker and the long way just seemed too daunting so I chose to make this one with a yellow cake mix. After I rolled it up and let it cool, I frosted it from a can of whipped chocolate frosting. We did dust it with real confectioners sugar though.

A true Buche de Noel or an (almost) instant Yule Log. . . whichever. It brings many wonderful memories and all good wishes for a Happy New Year!
