The "Little Refugee" ("Το προσφυγάκι") c.a. 100s AD

A Roman, bucolic statue around 63 cm tall, one of my personal favorites. A little child stands bare-footed, wearing a short cape with a hood on and holds tightly in his arms his favorite puppy

I love how simple and yet detailed this sculpture is! The child's plump features and the cape on his head and the puppy that has its legs pulled in as the child holds it! Such a tender little statue!

The name of the statue comes from the fact that it was discovered in Smyrna and when the terrible destruction of 1922 happened, it was taken along to Greece and can be found in Athens today. It is said to be depicting a realistic scene from the life of poorer shepherds of the time given that the child is bare-footed.

Such an unknown statue that deserves more attention!
