Buff Bake Protein Cookie: Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookie Review
You can all probably tell I love cookies, and I love chocolate. Cookie dough this, chocolate flavour that… if it has either of those two elements (or even better, both at the same time - cookie dough brownies, anyone?), I’m on it faster than you can say, ”Brownies!”.
These BuffBake protein cookies (White Chocolate, Frosted Oatmeal Raisin and Peanut Choc Chip) are no exception. I’ve reviewed Lenny & Larry’s in the past and was impressed. Being a fan of BuffBake’s spreads as well, I felt these had a good chance of being impressive also.
Unfortunately, my first impression was of a broken cookie. While this is indicative of crumbliness (a good thing!), it was a little disappointing. It may just be that it got broken in transit.
One thing I have to say right now is that these have some AMAZING looking chocolate chips. Not only are they huge, but there are a lot of them. My inner chocoholic began to wiggle in anticipation. I was also receively a clear aroma of peanut butter - Reese’s would be proud of this combination!
As the cookie was broken and the chocolate chips were exposed, I took that as my cue to try one of those first.
So, I picked one out..
… And quite frankly, I found it disgusting. Eaten alone, it is far too soft to be ‘proper’ chocolate. It collapses as soon as you bite into it, and it tastes more of fat than it does of chocolate. It left me wondering if they had put the oil from their peanut butter into the chocolate to use as a binder whilst preserving the peanut flavour.
Yet, they don’t taste of peanut, but this can’t be classic chocolate - and the ingredients for the chips are Cane Sugar, Chocolate, Cocoa Butter, Milk fat, Non-GMO Soy Lecithin and ‘Natural Flavors’. It was vile! I wonder if they added too much milk fat?
It left my inner chocoholic feeling cheated. We aren’t even told what cocoa solid content it has :-(.
Eaten amongst the cookie, they are more tolerable as the soft, chewy texture with smatterings of peanut help to convey a better chocolate taste. But I can’t escape that horrible, almost gelatinous texture of these firm, yet collapsible chocolate chips. They don’t taste 'real’.
I never thought I would even think this next sentence, let alone share, but… The chocolate ruined this.
My inner cookie monster was appeased by the crumbly, yet soft texture of the cookie, however. I also loved how thick these cookies are.
It was not pleasant. Lenny & Larry’s make chocolate chips which are genuinely tasty, and those are vegan as well! I just can’t comprehend how these could be so inferior JUST BECAUSE of the chocolate.
BuffBake really had no excuse, especially with the nutritional content they’re playing with (they pull the cheeky ½ a cookie serving size fraud as well):
Another gripe while I’m at it… for the same nutritional content, these are 30g smaller than Lenny & Larry’s cookies. :-(.
These had so much potential to be fantastic, what with the huge chocolate chips. I was genuinely considering buying a box because I was thinking, “these can’t be bad!”
However, C7H8N4O2 (or on second thoughts, the lack of it) has betrayed me.
Taste Rating: 5 (The cookie itself? Excellent. The chocolate? Ruined it.)
Texture Rating: 4/10 (Again, the cookie itself was fantastic. But the borderline mushy chocolate chips horrified me. I need to be able to MUNCH through chocolate!)
Value Rating: 4/10 (I purchased this from The Protein Pick & Mix for £2.29 which is… more expensive than Lenny & Larry’s £1.99 and are a smaller serving size. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
Nutrition Rating: 5/10 (As above - a smaller serving, but lower in carbs than Lenny & Larry’s and higher in fats. It really comes down to what your preferences are, but I’d personally choose Lenny & Larry’s over these)
This is a shame. I was really hoping this would be fantastically tasty as my experiences with Buff Bake’s spreads have been good.
Back to the drawing board on the chips, Buff Bake?
I just hope the other two flavours are better!
