Beach Plum Roses of Cape Cod Gardens and Beaches
Tissue-soft delicate petals, with open faces turning to the warm sun, waving in the ocean breeze, the beach plum roses beaconing to me. How such fragile beauty survives in such cruel elements, the poor barren sandy Cape Cod beach soil, the blazing hot sun, the salty air and the violent winds, all of nature's strong fury that has brought many a sailor to his knees, none of this discourages the beautiful rambling salt spray rose. They thrive and survive through all the seasons to come back again and again with a damask scented bouquet and willingly sharing their beauty for all Cape Codders to enjoy. When flowers finish, the petals swirl down and carpet the earth, the fruit of the rose clings and grows. Oh delicious Cape Cod beach plum jelly awaits my palate.
The fiery sun slides down into the Cape Cod sea at day's end and the soft fog tiptoes in, bathing the roses in gentle moisture, making it's perfume drift in through the lace curtained windows, wake up sleeper, open the window wider, let the breeze and the fog in to deliver the message of the rose, let it circle around you, breath deep and fall into a dream-like consciousness, enjoy this little gift from heaven delivered by the salt spray rose. Beachcombing on Cape Cod Beaches looking for Treasures in the Sand
Walking, eyes cast downward, not from sadness but from anticipation, from wonderment of what the sea would present at our feet. Cool waves wash our feet, splashing over, tickling, and trying to draw us into her depths. Teasing us with little trinkets scattered on the shore. Encouraging us to dig deeper with our toes, scoop up some pretty shells, and collect smooth, rubbed-by- the-sea, colorful pebbles. Always taunting us to look closer to find something more. We walk further, just a little further, to find some virgin strip of shore where no one has searched today to scoop up all the treasures before us.
Looking ahead in the wet Cape Cod Beach sand there are no more footprints ahead, at last we are the first to explore what the sea has given. So many smooth colorful stones, rolling and tumbling in the surf, so hard to choose. Which ones shall we fill our pockets with, to bring home to line a windowsill, to place in the garden, to trigger the memories of our time at the shore.
The distance beacons us to come, maybe better treasures waiting for us to find up ahead. Who could resist the draw? Maybe a single gold coin washed ashore from a long ago sunken pirate ship. A small piece of broken flowered china from an intimate dining room abroad a ship, maybe from the fateful Titanic! Perhaps gleaming in the water a tiny gold ring tossed into the sea by a broken-hearted young girl who's lover was claimed by the sea and never returned. But return I must and head back from whence I came, with pockets filled with colorful sea glass, tiny pink shells, pearly white stones, and even more valuable, thoughts to fill my memory jar from the Cape Cod seashore.
