A new season starts - Inizia una nuova stagione

[Versione italiana più in basso] As usual, when Summer is approaching, at Oceanomare Delphis Onlus we feel very excited about the beginning of a new season of Ischia Dolphin Project: volunteers and researchers work side by side in monitoring the cetaceans inhabiting our sea, off the Island of Ischia, Procida, Ventotene, and Capri (Italy), on board the Jean Gab. We spent the first two weeks mostly preparing the camp and "refreshing" the Jean Gab...we went out few times but with huge satisfaction!

Here what Carlotta told us, as an ODO researcher on board: "During the first trip on Jean Gab, we met several species of birds (Cory's shearwater - in the picture - and Manx shearwater) and some turtles (Caretta Caretta, also in the picture). Then we met a group of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in a single day, what a triumph! We did five encounters with single whales. The photo analysis identified two animals. while in the acoustic recordings there were at least three clicking whales. About the striped dolphins, we observed them during socializing, traveling and feeding in the same area where the sperm whales were foraging (you can see the video we made with a drone here).

The third week was more "silent": “We met only one sperm whale, Brunone, our beloved old acquaintance sighted for the first time in 2004 and met several times in the past 15 years. We spent a lot of time searching for cetaceans during the week, but we only met lots of birds (of which we collected data, thanks to the collaboration with Ardea, an ornithology association whose President  Rosario Balestrieri - was on board with us), a turtle and a manta. This time we had volunteers from all over the world: Italy, Bahrein, UK and France! All of them enjoyed a great sailing trip...we went around (almost) the whole Ischia island! Berta and Sterna, our two dogs, were great as usual, doing their job on board the Jean Gab!”

Come ogni anno, mano a mano che si avvicina l’estate cresce l’adrenalina in tutto lo staff di Oceanomare Delphis Onlus per la ripresa del tanto amato Ischia Dolphin Project: volontari e ricercatori fianco a fianco per monitorare la vita dei cetacei nelle acque al largo delle isole di Ischia, Procida, Ventotene e Capri a bordo del veliero Jean Gab! Le prime due settimane sono trascorse per lo più preparando l’attrezzatura e “rinfrescando” Jean Gab...ma le poche uscite fatte hanno dato emozioni enormi!

Ecco cosa ci racconta Carlotta, ricercatrice ODO: “Durante la prima uscita abbiamo incontrato diverse specie di uccelli marini (berte maggiori, nelle foto in alto, e berte minori) e tartarughe (Caretta caretta, foto in basso). Successivamente abbiamo effettuato tre avvistamenti di stenelle striate (Stenella coeruleoalba) e capodogli (Physeter macrocephalus) in un’unica giornata: un trionfo! In particolare, abbiamo approcciato singoli individui per 5 volte, fotoidentificando due animali, ma dalle registrazioni acustiche risulta che gli individui di capodoglio erano almeno tre! Abbiamo potuto osservare le stenelle in fase di socializzazione (abbiamo anche realizzato un video con il drone: clicca qui per vederlo!), per poi vederle spostarsi in gruppo e mangiare nella stessa zona dei capodogli.”

“La terza settimana con i volontari è stata più “silenziosa”: siamo riusciti a fare solo un avvistamento di capodoglio... e si trattava proprio di Brunone, un esemplare avvistato per la prima volta in queste acque nel 2004 e incontrato varie volte in questi 15 anni. Nonostante le tantissime ore di osservazione, a parte Brunone e un po’ di fischi di delfino non abbiamo effettuato avvistamenti veri e propri: solo tanti uccelli marini,  di cui abbiamo raccolto i dati grazie alla collaborazione con Ardea, associazione di ornitologi con cui collaboriamo dal 2015, e il cui presidente, Rosario Balestrieri, è salito a bordo in una delle uscite. Abbiamo incontrato anche una tartaruga e una manta! I volontari che ci hanno affiancato in questo periodo sono stati simpaticissimi e provenivano da tutto il mondo: Italia, Regno Unito, Bahrein, Francia...e hanno goduto di una bella veleggiata, abbiamo girato quasi tutta l’isola!”

Berta e Sterna, le nostre compagne di viaggio a quattro zampe, hanno fatto il loro dovere come sempre!

Dear Jean Gab, there’s a a letter for you

[From week 16 of Ischia Dolphin Project,  28rd Aug - 3rd Sept]

“Dear Jean Gab,

at the end of an adventurous month, the last day on board has come, for me. This week has been a quiet one, with only one volunteer on board (Sven, an old acquaintance of Ischia Dolphin Project). The island is still recovering from the earthquake and we try to regain the normal rhythm. 

On the first day, no sighting: long wave and a lot of dolphin whistles, but we didn’t see any cetacean. We heard some sperm whale clicks, though. So the next day we headed towards Cala Profonda to hear it again. We put the hydrophones in the water and...we recognize the clicks, around 11 o’ clock. It’s the first sighting of a sperm whale for Sven in ten years of going out on the sea with IDP! He was incredibly happy!

As happened some weeks ago, we had an enthusiastic long tracking of the sperm whale: 4 sightings! We were particularly lucky: the last sighting ended with an unexpected and spectacular breaching of the animal. We were amazed by that huge jump! It was probably a young sperm whale, around 8 m long. Wonderful!

On the next day, we came back in the same area hoping to meet the sperm whale again, but we didn’t hear it. On Friday we heard some clicks and then lost the track. 

On Saturday we didn’t go out on the sea because of bad weather (rain, after all these months!), but we definitely consider ourselves very satisfied of the week thanks to that day with the breaching!

Now I sadly go home, taking in my suitcase the desire of coming back.”

[Dalla sedicesima settimana di Ischia Dolphin Project, 28 Ago-3 Set]

“Caro Jean Gab,

dopo un mese di avventure è arrivato oggi l’ultimo giorno per me. Questa settimana è stata tranquilla, a bordo abbiamo avuto un solo volontario, Sven, affezionatissimo da anni. L’isola si sta ancora riprendendo dal terremoto e anche noi pian piano cerchiamo di riprendere il ritmo. Il primo giorno nessun avvistamento, purtroppo, onda lunga e molti fischi di delfino ma non siamo riusciti a vedere alcun esemplare. Abbiamo anche sentito click di capodoglio, così il giorno dopo ci siamo diretti verso Cala Profonda per provare a sentirlo di nuovo. Mettiamo in acqua gli idrofoni e... finalmente, verso le 11, riconosciamo click di un animale. Per Sven è stata la prima volta dopo 10 anni di uscite con Jean Gab! Era felicissimo!

Come già accaduto quest’anno, siamo riusciti a fare un lungo ed entusiasmante tracking del capodoglio: ben 4 avvistamenti. La fortuna è stata dalla nostra parte e l’ultimo incontro si è concluso con un inaspettato e magnifico breaching dell’animale. Siamo rimasti a bocca aperta per un bel po’, increduli per il poderoso salto dell’animale, probabilmente un giovane non più lungo di 8 metri. Stupendo!

Cavalcando quest’onda di emozioni, il giorno dopo torniamo nell’area ma non sentiamo più nulla, purtroppo; venerdi perdiamo traccia dell’animale dopo i primi click.

Causa maltempo non siamo riusciti a navigare sabato (piove, dopo tanti mesi) ma questo avvistamento con breaching appagherà per molto tempo.

Torno a casa a malincuore, portando con me in valigia una grande voglia di tornare.”

Towards the end of a wonderful adventure - My ODO week #17

[Versione italiana più in basso] We are sailing towards the end of Ischia Dolphin Project 2016! From 12th to 18th September, the Jean Gab vessel brought on the sea one of the last two groups of volunteers involved in monitoring cetaceans on Ischia’s sea during this year. Here what Alessandra Staffelli told us, as ODO researcher on board:

“This week [which was officially the 17th, because during 16th week the project wasn’t operational] we had a couple of volunteers in their thirties, a couple in their fifties and a 21 years old and Anita, who came back after some years. On board with us, the lovely ornithologist Ester Scardamaglia, who explained the main features of several bird species, like the “falcon of the marshes” - we watched three of them flying over our heads!

In the middle of the week, we came close to a dead turtle, without its head, near Casamicciola (Ischia). Then we headed out to deeper waters, looking for spermwhales...but we didn’t meet any of them. We arrived in Ventotene island, where volunteers enjoyed very much the celebration of the patron saint of the place, Santa Candida. On the next day, we were ready to come back to Ischia: on the west side of the island we finally met a group of tursiops, which spreaded great joy among the members of the crew...so we could face the return journey with a smile on our faces, despite the rain. At Ischia we managed to watch some video of the sightings and to do some photoidentification...an activity which deeply involved almost the whole group. On the last day, everyone gave his/her own best to finish all the tasks assigned as soon as possible to have some time to spend all together. A great way to end this memorable experience at Ischia Dolphin Project!”

Stiamo navigando verso la fine di Ischia Dolphin Project 2016. Dal 12 al 18 settembre, il vascello di ricerca Jean Gab ha portato in mare aperto il primo dei due ultimi gruppi di volontari impegnati nel monitoraggio dei cetacei nel mare di Ischia durante quest’anno. Ecco cosa ci racconta la ricercatrice ODO Alessandra Staffelli, che ci ha fatto compagnia nelle ultime settimane:

“Nel gruppo di questa settimana [la 17esima, perché la 16esima non ha avuto luogo per ragioni tecniche] c'erano persone di eta diversa: una coppia di trentenni, una di cinquantenni, una ragazza di 21 anni e Anita, che è ritornata dopo qualche anno di assenza. Questa settimana abbiamo avuto il piacere di avere a bordo come assistente un’ornitologa, Ester Scardamaglia, che ci ha illustrato le caratteristiche di tante specie di uccelli che abbiamo incontrato. Tra questi, il “falco di palude”: abbiamo visto passarne ben tre esemplari, sopra le nostre teste! A metà settimana, poco fuori Casamicciola (Ischia), ci siamo imbattuti in una tartaruga morta, senza testa. Poi ci siamo diretti verso acque piu profonde alla ricerca dei capodogli...ma niente da fare, non ne abbiamo incontrati! Siamo arrivati fino a Ventotene dove i volontari si sono goduti la fantastica festa di Santa Candida. L'indomani pronti a tornare ad Ischia: sul lato di ponente dell'isola avvistiamo un gruppo di tursiopi...finalmente! Nel gruppo si diffonde molta allegria e riusciamo ad affrontare il viaggio di ritorno sotto la pioggia con un bel sorriso sulle labbra. Una volta arrivati ad Ischia, approfittando del cattivo tempo, guardiamo un po’ di video dell avvistamento e facciamo fotoidentificazione, attività che ha appassionato un po’ tutto il gruppo di volontari. Il giorno della partenza tutti si sono impegnati al massimo per finire presto i servizi e trascorrere un po’ di tempo assieme. Un bel modo per concludere l’indimenticabile esperienza di Ischia Dolphin Project, dopotutto!”
