Yesterday was a day. That is not a problem.
So yesterday I had a bunch of different things happen to me. Some were way super awesome, one was depressing, one was a little scary, and one was just...tiring.
Gonna focus on one of the super awesome ones. On Saturday, a little after one thirty pm, I got to meet Anatola Howard! I was in the olympia area and we talked with each other a bit to see if we could get something together. So the venue was decided (Danger Room, one of the most awesome independent comics shops on the planet) and we spent a couple of hours wandering about the shop, talking with the owners (Casey and Frank are legit awesome humans) and talking comics!
So of course everone's gonna be like 'What's Ana like' and 'is she actually seven feet tall' or 'did she really name her fist Beethoven's First Cello after she beat up the Tong Triads?'
So for starters. Ana is way nice. When she came over, she'd brought me a picture and a minicomic. The first story in the minicomic was a conversation the writer had with an older man who loved walking. Hearing the old man talk about how amazing life was after a life as a sailor, I knew it was a book she'd chosen out specifically for me out of her collection. She also did a few classy sketches in my notebook when I asked her to see what she thought of my micron brush pen.
So the next thing is watching Ana work is sort of crazy. She drew three sketches that took up about three quarters of a page each i my large A2 notebook. Just bang bang bang. Ever line stroke was quick and sure. I dunno how homedude does it but I've never seen anyone draw in a way that was so... not effortless. But frictionless. Every movement turned into a purposeful line. Speaking of line, another awesome olympia comic artist and a close friend of mine for some years now, Zoey Hogan, also came by.
It was funny, I was talking about how I couldn't think of anyone who was as good a inker as Zoey was, or even good in comparison, and without skipping a beat, zoey puts up one of the ana's drawings and goes 'uh,dude? what about this?' Really fell into that one but I couldn't deny it. Ana just puts out good stuff.
We ended up staying around talking comics,I showed what a huge nerd i am. Who's surprised. I recommended a bunch of different things, but sadly due to a lack of a close western union, I ended up trudging around most of Olympia and some of Lacy and after two adventures I ended up at the tattoo parlor I was supposed to find directions to. Crazy stuff man.
Ana, if you're reading this, thanks for being cool and I hope you enjoyed the Danger Room! As to myself I hope I wasn't too weird. Here's to maybe trying this again sometime!
